most rated horns

All right, we've all gotten the overrated instruments over with. What horns live exactly up to the hype and no more?

I'll start with one:

Conn 6H

They won't blow your socks off, but they are great little .500s that do everything asked of them and not much more.

3B. Everyone knows they're a solid workhorse that is at home playing anything commercial, especially loud things. Hard to find a bad one...one of the most safe online purchases from any vintage. Like the 6H, they just work.

(Though I did borrow a 6H for a gig that totally blew my socks off...)

Modern Edwards. I think the sound is not really special but they feel very consistent and dependable. Also 3bs and new 88Hs.

I don't know that Bach trombones are greatly "hyped" - but I've played several, and found none to meet my expectations except for a Bach 36B. :idk:

But they are known as solid instruments, and... that's typically what they are.

Yamaha. They are consistently very good, but I’ve never played one that blew my socks off.

Agreed on Bachs. They're solid, they get the job done. That is all.

The Jinbao euphoniums are known as adequate, cost-effective instruments. This reputation is correct.

I disagree about bachs, especially the 36B. But I think I'm an outlier there

This one is a tough question though ... To me a horn is either right or it isn't. And there are some that are exceptional. I can't think of a horn that is "just adequate".

The Jupiter 740 bass trombone. Many say they suck, and the one I played in high school certainly lived up to this reputation.

For Tenor I agree a Bach 42 is what you expect and what you get. Some are exceptional, and very few comparatively stink (compared to how many are out there). I have had one really bad 42 straight section, but my friend loved it, so he now owns it.

For bass I would say Shires, Edwards, and Getzen are what you expect when you get one when it is one of the common set ups. They have the sound you expect and are what they are.
