Hi ,

Does anyone know where I can get the written solo for "Stardust"?

I would like the Tommy Dorsey transcription and the Urbie Green as heard on 21 trombones.

Don't know where you might find them other than transcribing them yourself. It might be hard but a worthwhile pursuit.

If you transcribe the solo yourself you'll actually internalize it, remember it and it will become part of your vocabulary. I know it's a pain in the butt... it's worth it though! If you can sing it, you can play it!

You are so right about internalizing it and LISTENING. It is going to be a long project by the looks of it.

I may do my own "hybrid" combining Louie Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, Tommy Dorsey and Urbie Green.

It is hard to believe someone hasn't published one of these over the years.

Jack's solo on the Shaw recording is possibly the career making 8 bars,. But I would still listen to his recordings with his own band

You're welcome. Almost everytime I've played this chart the bandleader wants to hear this exact solo. It's iconic. The "F" is always a challenge.

When the Shaw band was working, we always played it, of course. I occasionally played it as written but usually I tried to do something very similar but not exactly the same.

The funny thing is, when I first started playing with the Artie Shaw band, I didn't know that solo at all.

I've had to play this solo on gigs, as well. It's a great challenge to try to imitate that light, effortless-sounding Jack Jenney sound! As someone says above, you should hear his own version (which is a lot more than 8 bars!).

(You could do a lot worse than to steal some of Artie Shaw's playing on there, as well!)

Other great recordings of Stardust include the fabulous Bennie Green (the trombonist) and, of course, Clifford Brown.
