I have an Olds 1 mouthpiece in great shape for sale. These are hard to find! It was the biggest of the small-shank mouthpieces available with Olds trombones. For "bass," they used to say. For comparison purposes... I would say it is a bit smaller than a 6.5AL.

$50 includes First Class mail.

My Olds 1 mouthpieces (I have 2, from the Los Angeles / Fullerton era) look nothing like this one. They do not have this "sculpted" profile, but retain the classic Olds "tulip" shape. They are somewhat similar to a Bach 12C (same inside cup diameter - about 24.5mm, roughly similar cup depth) but with a significantly larger throat (6.35mm vs the Bach's 5.85mm diameter). The Olds 1 was indeed provided with the 1950s-1960s Olds small-shank "bass trombones" - such as my original Olds Ambassador with F-attachment (0.495"/0.510" dual bore).

My Olds 1 mouthpieces measure and feel much smaller than a 6½AL (25.40mm dia cup. 6.63mm throat). The shanks, of course, nestle perfectly into the "undersize" Olds trombone receiver.

I am curious about the provenance and specifications of Greenbean's "Olds 1."

Okay, I pulled out a box of mouthpieces today and made some comparisons.

This Olds 1 not as big as a 6.5AL. That was my faulty memory. (I am old.) The rim size is comparable to the 7C's I have here and the cup is deeper and more funnel-shaped. The rim is slightly wider and slightly less rounded (i.e., flatter) than the 7C's. But I would not describe it as a flat rim. I bought this one when I owned an Olds Recording - a wonderful horn - why did I sell that?... - and was not impressed with the tiny Olds 3's that are ubiquitous. This was the best playing of the several Olds mouthpieces I tried back then. And, yes, the shank is correct for Olds trombones.

Also, when I bought this we had a discussion on TTF. The Olds experts indicated that this was a later Olds design. 1970s.
