I have read online that Curtis Fuller passed away yesterday.

He was 86 years old. A sad day in the trombone world.

From US News:

The great jazz trombonist known as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and contributor to many classic jazz recordings, Curtis DuBois Fuller, passed away on May 8, 2021.

Fuller lost his Jamaican-born parents when he was young; he was raised in an orphanage. He was a school friend of Paul Chambers and Donald Byrd, Tommy Flanagan, Thad Jones, and Milt Jackson in Detroit.

After playing in a band with Chambers and brothers Cannonball and Nat Adderley for army service between 1953 and 1955, Fuller joined the quintet of Yusef Lateef, another Detroit musician.

He moved to New York and recorded his first sessions as a leader with Prestige in 1957.

One of my favorite trombone solos (and one of the first ones I remember) is Curtis’s in “Straight, No Chaser” from the Quincy Jones Quintessence album. Fantastic. I wish I had heard him live.
