It happened to me in my army days. No joke. But we still had a good laughter from it :-)

I experienced this at a military tattoo while a member of the Parris Island Marine Band.
The guy in charge of the US bands was an Army Major. He walked by us while warming up. Stopping to tell our Band Officer how great we sounded but was concerned about the lack of uniformity by "those horns on the front rank" (trombone section). Wanted all our slides to move together.
My father having been a Marine Bandsman before me had told me that old joke years earlier and here I was in 1978 seeing it unfold before my very eyes.
