I'm watching a Zoom Q&A by Ilya Finkelshteyn, principal cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony.
He gets a question about auditions in a large hall.
He starts by saying, "Well, remember... you're not a trombone! You're not going to fill that hall..."

Interesting tip...
He finds it useful to play along with a recording. It forces him to keep up, not stop, and gives him a sense of what's going on in the whole orchestra.
