SOLD
I am selling my Holton TR258. This is the screw bell version of the TR158, which was the horn used by the Chicago Symphony in the 1970s. I am asking $1,395, which includes the trombone, a custom Marcus Bonna detachable bell case in wine (maroon) nylon, and the factory hard case. I will entertain reasonable offers. There is no mouthpiece, but I can throw in a gold plated Denis Wick 5ABL for an additional $80. Buyer pays shipping. Local pickup is available in Houston, Texas.
This is a solid horn that will serve you well if you’re looking for a screw bell travel horn without wanting to spend big bucks on a boutique horn or having your fixed bell cut and converted. The large bell and rich, full sound are great for bridging the transition from tenor to bass trombone. It’s also a great choice for a player seeking a quality step-up horn on a budget.
CONDITION:
- This trombone has been professionally cleaned and serviced in August 2021. It is in good condition with a significant amount of lacquer wear across the entire horn, which does not affect playability. The slide works very well with no visible wear on the inner slide tubes. The slide will be shipped dry. The main tuning slide has several small, minor dings and some pitting in an area slightly less than one square inch. The rotor and linkage are in excellent playing condition. A slight crease on the outer edge of the bell flare was previously repaired and shows tool marks in the lacquer.
- The custom Marcus Bonna case is in like-new condition and has only been carried to one single gig. It includes a zippered music folder, matching double mouthpiece pouch, shoulder strap, backpack straps, and MB luggage tag.
- The factory hard case is in fair condition. It’s not pretty, but it’s solid and the latches have been replaced. Photos of the factory case are available on request, as it is currently in storage.
SPECS:
- S/N 584XXX. Most likely manufactured in 1984-85
- .547 bore
- 9" diameter red brass detachable bell with wire-reinforced rim
- Chrome-plated nickel-silver inner slide with seamless inner slide tubes
- Nickel-silver outer slide
- Traditional (closed) wrap F attachment
- Nylon ball-and-socket linkage
I’m happy to provide additional pictures or answer any questions.
