I'm searching for a used Bach 42 Tuning Slide - doesn't have to be in top notch condition.
Thx

Do you want the entire tuning slide assembly or just the crook?

Hi Brian,
The entire tuning slide assembly. I bought a semi trashed straight 42 bell section and it is missing the entire tuning slide.
Thx

I was wondering if someone here would pick that up

LOL.. I'm lucky it was me =) I talked to the guy selling it and got him to separate the case and damaged bell (I already have a 70s french case and sure don't need another).
I love my old 42b, but I rarely use the f-attachment...I've been thinking for a while that getting a straight bell section would be the cheapest way to have a "convertible" bach 42. Now I'm thinking - while having the bell repaired, should I go ahead and make it a screw bell?

I've heard quite conflicting things about one-piece bells like the Bach 42 being made into screwbells. If the bell can be reasonably repaired and plays well it might be worth it to try. The price point is certainly reasonable at least. Depending on the extent of the damage it might make the bell better since it would be a little reinforced in the area where the damage was if I'm remembering right.

Back to my question…..I have several Bach 42 crooks, but no complete assemblies. I could make one from new parts, but it is not particularly cost effective. Also, tuning slide assemblies should be fit to a specific instrument. They are not always an automatic fit or interchangeable.

I think Hickeys has new ones for sale on their page? I'd have to look. Bach often, in my opinion, charges weird things for parts. Sometimes its weirdly cheap, sometimes its expensive beyond the point where any reasonable person would buy it. But if its more towards the reasonable range, I'd charge some amount under that. Perhaps $150-350. I've seen Shires / Edwards ones going for that price recently.

Hi Brian, I eventually need the entire assembly. I could have it assembled here by Rich Ita - he is going to be doing some repairs on the bell section anyway. But I would need all the pieces...I think he would charge to much if he has to do any fabrication.
Thx

sorry to derail too badly but you also might want to consider one of the Hoelle tuning slides:

If I had a 42 right now and $500 to blow, I'd probably go for one of the copper ones. Aiden (Burgerbob) has one for his Bach 50 and absolutely loves it if I'm remembering right.

Yes, I had looked at those... but I need to see what Rich is going to charge me for the bell section repairs before I decide... I'm trying to keep this horn to a reasonable price (or I should have just bought a straight 42 complete).
If worse comes to worse, I'll just use the tuning slide from my 42b on the straight 42 (assuming it fits ok).

I’m on the road tonight and much of tomorrow. I can price out the parts for an unassembled tuning slide when I get settled back home. The crook itself will not be that expensive because I have multiple used parts for that. The other parts are new that I have in stock for building custom horns. Those individual parts can get a bit pricey…..that’s just the way Conn-Selmer is with parts. I need to check what I paid for those and I’ll try to price it out for you by Monday.

I've done a screw-bell on a Courtois 420 that works very well, totally recommended.
I also happen to have the full tuning slide assembly from that horn available.
As noted above, it will most likely need to be fit to the bell by a tech.
Pm if you're interested.
