I've picked up a nice King 3BF that I've been using for anything commercial. I'm keeping the 356 slide to attach to... another project I hope to have finished soon.

The background on this is I picked up a 646 awhile ago to make into a 356 since I wasn't having any luck finding a used 356. Then, of course, a 356 came up for sale! This is sort of the inverse of what will be my medium bore setup.

It has a straight 525/525 slide. The crook was replaced when I got the slide. Slide seems to be slightly out of alignment but is smooth; maybe a 7/10? I'm comparing it to a basically new lightweight Shires though so I'm perhaps... too harsh on its function. There is lacquer wear on the cork barrel and the tubes. I have not removed the lacquer from the slide, but I can for no additional cost if you'd prefer it. It will have a satin appearance like the bell if I were to do that.

The bell section is the 356 bell with a nearly new gold brass tuning slide. I purchased it for the 646, which had a trashed tuning slide. I notice no imperfections in it but it is 2 y/o at this point so I can't in all honesty call it "new". The valve section needs to be restrung. I'm not very handy with that type of thing or else I'd do it myself. The rubber bumpers probably also need to be replaced... if it doesn't sell in a few weeks I'll take care of it myself. The valve itself moves freely and gives a nice pop.

The bell itself is the original 356G bell, so gold brass. I just did a satin finish on it yesterday (pictured). I coudln't get to everything without getting the tubing on the valve section so there's a spot where it meets up with the tubing where it is original lacquer. Fortunately, that lacquer was in pretty good shape.

A few years ago, I had my tech solder the bell bead on it. To the best of my knowledge, the Yamaha bells on these models are all one-piece (think more Bach like) but they don't have the soldered bell bead you'd traditionally find on them. The net effect of this is that they can be quite flexible and very dark/covered/whatever word you use to describe that. This bell is no different, being on the heavier/thicker side. The soldering of the bell bead seems to have done a little to help clarify articulations. Brings it more in line with what you'd expect from say, a Bach 36G in my opinion.

The combination is that this makes a pretty interesting horn that is albeit not well suited to me, which makes sense given that I have strayed away from the more Bach like side of things for a few years now. If I play classical, I'm going to reach for my Shires large bore. If I want commercial, I'm going to reach for my King 3BF. If I want a medium bore... I'll reach for the next franken abomination I'm working on that has 2 piece bell & soldered bell bead

Note: I would trade this for a screw bell (not even the whole section, just the bell) for a tenor. 7.5", 7.75", 8", 8.5", or even 9". Preferrably lightweight, 2 piece, soldered bell bead. Or possibly a tenor screwbell case.
