For those who don't speak DJ's language, here is the translation....
He has miscellaneous King stuff for sale.
Sorry DJ....no disrespect. I have heard that you have a wonderful collection and you a great person to contact for equipment. However, I never understand what you are posting. If you want my business, you will need to describe your equipment in full, coherent sentences. I prefer to not send my money to a person who communicates in mumbo jumbo. Maybe it's just me......I just think you probably have the potential to significantly increase your sales if you describe your offerings in a clearer syntax.

LOL.
I have learned that ropy loopy is a description of the particular engraving (I used to have a king with that engraving - it looks almost like a lasso).
Apparently the 2B+ has some wild patina, so he hasn't stripped it.
I have no idea what "Or BAC else worth Kelly look" means.

Uhhh, yeah...that's pretty disrespectful.

Moving on...
Maybe I'm biased because I've actually been to DJ's place multiple times and bought horns from him, but the important information is all perfectly understandable to me.
If you knew DJ, you'd know that changing his posting style is not going to happen, and he has no issues with the number of sales he gets.
DJ and his posting style are treasures!

I have to agree with Finetales.
If you don't like or understand DJ's writing style, then you can choose not to purchase anything from him, or to not interact with him at all. There's really no need to publicly post a wagging finger criticizing his writing and declare that he should conform to your standards of communication or essentially be considered an untrustworthy person.

I understand where that sentiment comes from. I have on occasion bought from DJ. It's hard to "shop" because you can't tell what he has, what condition it's in, or what it might cost. About 3/4 of the time I don't get a response from him when asking about something. I think at some point someone had an impression that DJ was a bargain basement for old trombone stuff, and started recommending him to every poor student who came thru. DJ seems to do what he can to dispel that impression, sometimes maybe a little more harshly than strictly necessary. But I guess if sarcasm is embedded in haiku, maybe that's easier to take. It's cool to have characters, but you have to have the key.
I would sometimes love to see what he has, and he has at times published lists of horns. Maybe I'm shopping for an Olds flugabone or an 8h bell that isn't on the list...

As far as I am concerned DJ is a unique institution that makes the Trombone Chat world a more interesting and colorful place. It has been said that a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds. There is too much conformist behaviour afoot at present so I salute him.

I definitely fall into the DJ "fan club" group. Allow me to make some suggestions on working with DJ, since I just visited him last month.
If at all possible, you should visit him in person and see his amazing collection. Dealing with him remotely is doable but not your first choice. DJ is not a brass technician--he buys and sells horns, mostly trombones, his specialty is Kings, but he has some of everything. He sometimes work with some brass repair guys in St. Louis, but since he is over an hour's drive away, and they are all slammed with business, most of what he gets in goes out in the same condition. If you are willing to buy something that might need some minor work--slide alignment, dent removal, etc. you may find some great stuff, but obviously, you need to do that in person.
His trombone collection is housed in an old house right off the old downtown in the small town of Chester, Illinois, just over an hour's drive south of St. Louis (Mostly on Interstate 55, then some back roads to the first bridge across the Mississippi River south of St. Louis, and two minutes later, you are at his house).
He was very accommodating to my schedule--I worked with him to schedule the visit via text and email about a week in advance. DJ is incredibly knowledgable about trombones, and lots of fun to visit. I figured on a short hour visit, find something nice, buy it and leave. I was there three hours, playing one horn after another after another and when I finally absolutely had to go, DJ was stilling digging out additional hours for me to try and play, and also inviting me to stay for lunch.
DJ really knows trombones and their value. His prices are very fair, but don't expect to get a steal--he knows more than you do. I walked away with a gorgeous Conn 88H "Elkie", that is now a daily player in my collection, and (my great find), an Olds Valve trombone (no other markings on the bell), that appears to be a .500 bore, was made in January of 1977, the year Olds closed the business, but plays beautifully, loving singing tone that is similar to a 2B. Because it has obviously sat unplayed for years, the third valve was stuck work, though DJ got it going somewhat. I figured I would take it in for some work on the valve, but lots of valve oil and lots of playing time, and it has smoothed out and doesn't need a trip to the technician. DJ threw in three or four mouthpieces of my choice as I walked out the door.
St. Louis is somewhat of a mecca for trombones--if you have the time on a visit, also consider making an appointment and go visit The Brass Exchange as well. But block out the best part of a day for a DJ visit--an hour drive down there, an hour back to St. Louis, and who knows how long you will spend with DJ.
By the way, DJ takes cash and likes Paypal. Doesn't use credit cards. When I completed my deal with him, I just pulled out my phone, when to my Paypal account, send him the money, he checked his phone, saw the money was there, and we were done.
There is truly no one else in the trombone world like DJ!!

Hi DJ,
As I just picked up a King New Proportion on the cheap without a case, I find myself shopping around for a decent coffin case. I saw your recent post in the classifieds here. What cases do you have for sale, and what's the asking price?
Thanks

Yeah, I don't deny DJ knows his stuff and he's a colorful character. You just have to be ready to make an investment in the effort. It's not like buying from the online photo catalogs at Dillons or Brass exchange or even Quinn, which is kind of what people expect, not many of us can make the trip for the personal experience. It's obviously his choice how to do what he does, just as long as he knows he's probably leaving deals on the table. Last I checked my money is still green, and I'd be willing to bet he's got stuff I'd like to have.

This is part of the problem. I don't know where you get the idea that I'm a "poor boy" or why having a rip at customers is ok. True I'm not buying new Shires every other week, and I'll buy one without lacquer if it plays as well as a pretty one. I did buy a 10h from you and some 8h parts. Sorry if that offended you.
I've bought from BE, Q, and even BAC without drama.
Anyway, best of luck with what you do. I'll still buy stuff if I don't have to do a dance to get it. You really don't need to throw insults to get me to buy stuff.

Really? I think I have shed a rather bright light on this situation. I am definitely not drinking the Kool-Aid cascading from the water key of this cult.

You aren't shedding any kind of light on the situation. DJ has been a reliable dealer in instruments going back to the Trombone-L List Serve. He's never (to my understanding) ever misrepresented a horn. He charges fair prices but on the low end. He doesn't (or didn't used to) flood you with a load of pictures. He's an artist and a free thinker. You have to figure out what he's dealing.
He also does fountain pens.
But if you don't like his style, feel free not to deal with him.

DJ also makes some incredible "art deco" mutes.
He's not a "dealer" - he's an unconventional artist and poet who also plays, collects, and sells trombones.
By contrast, Quinn is a "dealer."
Glad they're both part of our community. π

I got a "Clari-Tone" mute from DJ made out of a clarinet bell. Plays great and totally unique - sounds like a cross between a straight and a bucket. I wish more people made experimental mutes like that.
(When I got that mute I learned there was also one made from a trumpet bell...need to get my hands on one of those!)

(When I got that mute I learned there was also one made from a trumpet bell...need to get my hands on one of those!)

The "Clari-Tone" and "Trump-Et-Tone" were actually made in 2013 by yours truly during an extended stay at DJ's "B&B" and were featured in our shared booth at Columbus ITF. DJ provided the inspiration and had the materials on hand (old yarn cones, balsa wood, trumpet and clarinet bells, wine corks), and he has a well-equipped shop where ideas became realities. Great fun making those, along with a couple of other designs (the Cry Babie and the Buzz Cut), which are now cult collector's items.
One of the Trump-Et-Tones is still upstairs at the B&B. Ask DJ to sell it to you and send me my cut...

Those mutes are super cool. nice to finally see DJ. his posts are always challenging for me to read but his reputation is excellent. I would buy from him in a second if I needed something.
