WTB: Medium bore trombone

I am looking for a .525 bore horn for a friend's son who is ready to step up to a better horn with a valve. I'm thinking something like a Back 36, Benge 175F, Conn 88H w/.525 slide, or something similar. Price needs to be reasonable, so Shires/Edwards are probably not much of an option. Thanks!

New or used, US or China? Or a dollar limit might help.

I was told $3,000 is the limit, so that should be able to buy good, used medium bore horn. New or used is fine.

That's a pretty steep limit. You should be able to buy almost anything

The safest, easiest to get, most available will be Bach 36b or King 607/608, and a couple Yamaha models I'm sure others will mention. . King will be less expensive. The Bach is a full-on pro horn. Both good choices. If you buy used, I'd get it from a dealer who can guarantee condition. Best if you can go in person. Get a middle of the road mouthpiece like a Bach 7c or 6.5al.
With used horns, slide condition is everything. For kids, shine seems to be important.
You won't have to spend all that money. It will depend on how close to new you go with the Bach. You can get a new King for that money.

I have two that fit the bill:
--Getzen 1025. Excellent condition .525-bore horn with F-att.
--Yamaha 646. Also very nice .525 horn with F. Pro-level horn.
I will PM you.

Match personality with the instruments
Considering status local preferences
Band director or teacher preference advice
Orchestra concert band mixed pop jazz
Likes new. Or trusts and comfortable with old tried and true. I was surprised recently by a returning
pro customer looking for the same type of trombone
and thought he would go for a rare king 3B plus a fatt
instead a much used king 608 took the audition!!!!
Ideally. Try several !!!
Bachs are kinda the squarest
If you want to invest the limit get a “boutique “
That is modular for a genius and experimentation
Minded borderline geek type this will maintain
Interest support curiosity and the industry
Bring excitement and the best functionality
Possible get a good case too
Mouthpieces can be interesting
The good thing about modular is availablity
Of used components
Edwards has been around the longest and has the most parts. Shires next
These horns are and or can be the best
But actually GREAT PERFECTION SEEMS. CHIPPED
and it gets down to talent the greatest gift
Determination drive obsession. Inspiration
And practice
The instruments are just a means of communication
All the money in the world cannot buy
What has been given to some freely
Today I played old Bessie
In Steeleville Illinois Oktoberfest parade
She was my second trombone
I feel so fortunate to have such a friend and the life
And hope this for all DJ

This is for a kid. We don't know how careful he is about his horn, and the environment in which it will be used may not be the best for a really good instrument.
A good used Bach 36B might fill the bill, as would any of the following:
Benge 175F
Conn 79H, 50H
Getzen 1025 (or is it 1036?)
Holton TR-160, 682
King 607, 608, 2125-F (3B+F), maybe even 3BF
Olds SuperStar or Recording with F
Reynolds Onyx, Medalist with F
Yamaha 446, 646,684, 640, maybe even 350
There are even a couple of Chinese made instruments that may be OK. I particularly like the JP-Rath models and the Wessex Tubas models. These instruments are QC checked by people who will sort out the bad ones; something that seems to be lacking in Chinese QC.
Lots of choices. Just don't spend so much that if the kid's "friends" trash the horn it can't be replaced.

Yes, very easy to pick up a nice 36b at half that budget. Seems the safest route.

With a $3K limit you would be surprised what you can get. Off of this forum I have gotten a Rath R3 and a Rath R4F... both under $3K.
I would recommend a Bach 36B or a Getzen 1036... those are both fantastic choices.

My old King Tempo II 607F is for sale on The Brass Exchange, I think Doug has it listed for around $600. It got me through HS and college and was a great horn for me through those years.
