The answer is: smaller than you think, and probably smaller than the mouthpieces it compares to in how they feel to play. That's because what you experience as resistance is not just the throat, but also the shape of the taper after the throat.

Excellent answer, Gabe.

My DE G8 Shank throat measures at ~6.63mm (0.261") diameter - same as the spec for a Bach 6½AL or Bach 5GS; smaller than a Bach 6½A or Bach 5G (7.00mm / 0.276" diameter). I suspect that the backbore (taper downstream of the throat) is at least as important as the throat diameter. Mouthpiece gurus like Doug Elliott could probably write essays on this topic! :idk:

Good choice, Doug. I am learning that mouthpiece design and performance is more complicated (and subtle) than just a numbers game. Two or three "specifications" will not tell you how a mouthpiece will play; to think otherwise is a fool's errand.
