"new" Greg Black bass GS depth option

Howdy y'all,

For those of you that enjoy the sound of the big Greg Black pieces but not always how they play, check out the GS depth available for some of them.

I have played a 1G .312 #2 for a long time (this has a smaller throat and backbore than the stock model) and I really enjoy this piece. Of course, it's not perfect and sometimes it doesn't match up with some horns that don't respond to deep cups.

I recently got a Laskey 90D that has the same rim size and throat as the GB I play, but is significantly shallower. It solves many of those issues like high range slots, articulation, etc. It's not quite the same... The sound is narrower and doesn't have that same quality. Mine also had a bunch of missing plating on the rim and is off to be replated!

I learned that Greg's new site has a GS, or slightly shallower option available for the 1G model that I enjoy. I ordered one and got it less than a week later (things are different now!!).

Wow. It has the same rim I love, the same sound with more high overtones and color, and is actually just more even over the whole range. I don't have to work so hard on getting a ping on the front in any range. The low range is more even and still has the weight of the normal pieces.

Think of it kind of like a Yamaha Yeo, a big piece but not too deep (but better than the Yeo in basically every way :pant: )

Would you say that the 1GS is still suitable as an "everything" mouthpiece even with the reduced depth? In my experience Laskey bass pieces tend to be very overtone heavy, does the Greg Black have some of this character?

IMO, with the small time I've had with it, yes and yes. It's got more color than the standard mouthpiece, but isn't light or nasty. I'll use it on a couple concerts I have coming up and I'll know more then!

I don't think so... I think it would be more like the BLL option, the goldilocks zone.

I got my GB 1 1/4GS .312 #2 today. I do like it better than the regular G cup. I've only played it a short while but can say I agree with Aiden's assessment above. It is a little brighter than the regular cup which is what I need. Both pieces are the .312 #2 option.

Still really digging mine. If I need to, I can darken it up by changing a couple things. Otherwise it's got a lot of color and just so much easier than the stock depth.

I will pile on and say that yes, the 1GS does work very well indeed!! Great focus a core. Very well suited to a horn with 1 piece bell, all yellow construction.

After a week on this piece I can say I like it and am going to stay on it. It fits well in the brass band and big band sections I play in. I'll get the rim gold plated or get another one that is gold.

What weight would you suggest for this kind of piece? Regular seems like the go-to but maybe something slightly heavier (medium) may be better.

It really depends. Regular is their best guess for what most people want, so I'd start there.

Regular is by far my favorite.
