Has anyone spent time working through Bob’s Technical Studies etc? I don’t recall much discussion about it. Although one might expect a bunch of transcribed doodle tongue solos over changes, the book is more of a general guide to learning and playing trombone. Similar to The Art of Trombone Playing by Kleinhammer and Yeo, but updated.

The first half is familiar stuff: warmups, tonguing, lip slurs and flexibility exercises. It’s a bit different in that it gets into doodle tongue exercises. Also, it offers a bit of structure in the sense of “do this everyday” and “do this every 3rd day”. It seems to set out pretty practical advice that, if followed, would give you some pretty decent chops.

I use this book quite a lot, especially the first part and find it a great way to maintain the basics.

My go to books for technical stuff are........

McChesney - Technical Studies

The Reindhart Routines

Mark Nightingale - Warm up book

Michael Davis - Total Trombone. + Cd
