The Western Michigan University Trombone Studio announces a Graduate Teaching Assistantship for either tenor or bass trombone, beginning with the Fall, 2022 school year for someone seeking a Master of Music degree. The assistantship package includes salary, tuition remission, and other benefits, which would cover the complete cost of tuition for the degree, as well as some money toward housing costs. Assistantship responsibilities may include performance with the School of Music’s Graduate Brass Quintet, depending on the recipient.

Graduates of the WMU trombone studio have had great success in national and international competitions, including being named a finalist, alternate or honorable mention in one of the International Trombone Association solo competitions over 40 times. Former students are usually admitted to the most competitive trombone programs in the country, and many perform with professional orchestras or military bands. For those of you that are young and looking for that next place to go for your master's degree as a grad assistant you would not go wrong with Steve Wolfinbarger. I had the opportunity to study with him one summer in the early 80's at UNT while was there finishing his DMA.

Quick story about him at ITA in 1982-he was a winner of one of the solo competitions. The winners at that time performed as part of a master class with different players from around the world. Steve's master class was with Carsten Svanberg. All of other student winners would play and the teacher would always have some comments about something to improve. After Steve had played his first selection of the master class Carsten turned to the audience and said, "anyone want to buy a trombone? Cheap".

Is it offline, or there is possibility to graduate assistanship online? Because of the covid 19 it is very limited to move across the country :frown:

Ha! Thanks! I forgot about that. That was my real introduction to the International Trombone Assocaition. Such a great event that year! Definitely memorable for me.
