A very young Gunhild Carling in a TV show from 1984. Phenomenal playing by a very talented person already at 9 years old.

I'm a big fan of Gunhild! I enjoyed the recent interview with her on the tromboneretreat podcast. She spoke about learning trombone as a child (largely without formal training). It's fun to see some of that captured on film. She also spoke about how she prefers to play farther out on the slide than most folks. You can see that here :D

Thanks for the link :)

There's a lot of appreciation of the style. Amazing in such a young person. And the "death grip" slide holding is amusing.

I like to watch Gunhild Carling on Youtube. She has an amazing tone even at that age.

I think Gunhild and her sister hold the slide like that. She seems to be pretty flexible with it.

The grip was the first thing Herb Rankin corrected when I started lessons. I have seen several college level music majors holding the slide like that. Perhaps the norm has changed.
