What size mouthpiece do our members recommend for an advanced player of a Shires Large bore tenor trombone?

More information is needed!

-On what mouthpiece(s) is the player most comfortable?

-With what type of ensembles does the player perform?

-Have they had issues with previous mouthpieces?

“Common” options might include pieces in the area of 5G, 4G, Schilke 51-ish, or Wick 5AL, but those are somewhat generalized, as it is quite dependent on the player’s own physiology and experience level.

Prefer more flat than rounded. Has used Schilke 52 and 53 models on similar size horn. Will play horn primarily in auditioned community concert bands.

Flatter rim in the range of Schilke 52-53 could be like a Wick 4.5AL or 4AL, or the shallower B cup (4BL, etc.). Additionally, you might see if Schilke makes a 52C4 or 53C4 If that size has been working well.

If the player is pretty serious, and has a bit more money to spend, you’ll find nothing but praise for Doug Elliott and his series of mouthpieces, as well. Doug is a highly regarded member of our community and has a knack for fitting mouthpieces to players, even remotely, such as over Skype/Zoom/etc...

Is the player

High placement?

Low placement ?

Up or downstream?

Get them to have a chat with DE, he will then recommend the most efficient size for the players chops, he also suggests other makes that may suit, but working with Doug and his system allows the player to dial in on the best fit

'Pompatus' is on the money. Ask these questions of Doug Elliot, you wont need to go anywhere else. Skype him and I'll wager you will get the most suitable mouthpiece youve ever used!... Doug
