Have been getting back into playing and am looking to pick up a large bore horn. Currently playing on the Yamaha 683 I used in high school/college, but not entirely sure what to go for in a f-att horn being out of the game for so long. Probably looking at $1500-ish for the upper end of the budget. Thanks!

Look into a Bach 42! You can usually find them for around 12-1500 very easily and they're great horns.

There are a lot of options, depending on what you feel you need.

For a large bore with F for less than $1500 you will have to go used. Anything new at that price point is probably pretty poor.

Yamaha has produced a bunch of large bore F-attachment horns, all of them similar to the 682 that would have been contemporary to your 683: 448, 548, 620, 882 (low to high price)

Bach 42Bs and Conn 88Hs can be found used near your price point.

Benge 190 F will be a great value. They punch well above their price. A couple have appeared in our Classifieds recently.

King 4BF and 5B are often available. 5B is normally an F-attachment horn -- any straight version has been modified.

Getzen 1048 and 3048

Jupiter XO series.

There are Chinese instruments sold by Wessex Tubas and J.P. Rath (John Packer). Not easy to find used simply because they haven't been available that long.

Good luck in your search.

$1500 will get you a decent used horn. I recently saw a used Bach 42 AF on eBay for less than $1000, and there are several used Yamaha large bores on eBay and Reverb for less than $1000. Dillon, Brass Exchange, Baltimore Brass, etc. all will have many good used horns in your price range.

If you're kind of on the fence and are looking for a great quality horn at a lower price, check out a Blessing B-88. Lots of those around at the $500 price point from eBay, or $750 or so if purchased from a local retailer. Not knowing where you're located, I can't recommend anyone specific, but local music repair stores will often keep one or two used large bore instruments for sale, and will almost certainly let you try them out.

Congratulations. Please give us a report on this horn when you get it. The Benge 190F is said to be one of those "unfairly underrrated" trombones! Wonder how "mouthpiece-dependent" it is? :idk:
