Hi All,
Up for sale is my Holton TR181 bass trombone.
Specs:
-.562" bore
-Double inline independent rotor valves
-10" red brass bell
-Traditional wrap
-Nickel silver outer slide
I bought this horn used over 10 years ago and it's served me well. It'll give you that big, fat sound that's great for jazz band. Also played the low trombone parts in university wind ensemble on this horn and thought it blended nicely. Had a finger ring and Saturn water key installed shortly after it came into my possession.
Didn't really want to part with this horn, but I'm just not playing it. Doing more lead/solo jazz rep on my Recording now and this one has been sitting in the case for a few years. I recently pulled it out and went over it, doing a polish and lubrication treatment. All valves and tuning slides move like butter. Handslide is easily an 8/10. No dents anywhere on the horn. Only found one small ding on the F attachment. Lacquer shows minimal wear, even on high-contact surfaces. Overall I'd say about 90% intact. Not sure about the age of this instrument. Serial number 982,XXX. Only thing I could find online was this was post-1980.
US$1,900 shipped.
Comes with original Holton 1 1/2G mouthpiece, hardshell case, original water key, and lyre mount (no clip). I can throw in a gold-plated Bach Megatone 1 1/2G for an extra $100. Open to hearing *reasonable* offers. More pictures available upon request.
Located in southwestern Ontario. Anything else you'd like to know, just ask.
Thanks for looking!

Probably a (late?) 90s horn. I have a Holton bass slide receiver stamped 989xxx that came out of a parts bin ~2005, so it's older than that at least.
I always thought the convertible second valve tuning on these horns was really neat.

Thanks for that info spencercarran.
I had assumed a manufacture date somewhere in the 90s, but it's nice to get that narrowed down a bit.
The options you get with these second valves are great. It was definitely a selling point for me when I was shopping for bass 'bones. I believe this model is one of the few (the only?) configurable to that many different tunings direct from the factory.

The Olds P24G also came from the factory able to be set up with the 2nd valve in either G or Gb, by swapping the slides if I remember right. That's the only other one I know of.

I'm surprised to hear that.
For all the earnest discussions of G vs. Gb I just presumed every two-valve bass trombone had that option like mine did. :D

Also Benge 290, Courtois 551, Yamaha 613H. Courtois is the only one still in production AFAIK and it is pricey.
