Looking for a small shank 51 (plain 51) or other similar sized pieces.

Recently acquired a vintage Bach 36 and am trying to give myself some options, so if you have something else similar that I might like to try without breaking the bank…please send an email or PM.

Already have: Bach 6.5AL, 5G, 5GS; Schilke 51C4.

Thanks!

FWIW I found a Wick 4BS to work great on my 36. If you want smaller sizes you could try out 5BS and/or 6BS.

I second this opinion, depending on the timbre you’re going for. I’ve played a Wick 4.5BS on my 36B a bunch, and absolutely love it in situations where a big “dark” sound is wanted.

Also, Doug Elliott’s recent E* shank is magic with E cup and your choice of rim. I’ve used an LT102.E.E4* setup, and those newer shanks have some kind of special sauce.

Tommy,

I have differentiated a few mouthpieces that you may want to integrate into your search.

I have none to send, but pieces in this general size range include:

Hammond 12L

Hammond 12ML

Hammond 13ML

Josef Klier 8C

Marcinkiewicz 5G

Marcinkiewicz 5GW

Marcinkiewicz 9B - Bob Stroup

Giardinelli SYM-AL

Laskey 54M

Laskey 57MD

Yamaha 51

Yamaha 51C4

Schilke 50

All should work well with a Bach 36 - and may work well with your chops.

Good luck!

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I'll take all of these other options into account.

I just received the horn yesterday, and it is very lively! I can see what everyone says on here about the 36 being so versatile depending on what you use and how you play it.

So far, the 51C4 brings out a really nice response; I'm looking forward to trying a straight "51" to see if it can get the same overall response with a little more depth/less edge.

I really like my 51 in my .525 Shires.
