I need to move some horns...

Here is a nice Conn 79H. I am not sure of the year but I assume early 1970's?... Medium-bore, F-attachment, slide is nice, original case is nice, ... $850 + shipping

Is that an 8" or 8.5" bell? I think the later non-Elkharts used the bigger bells.

The bell is 8 1/2". The bell engraving makes me think of early to mid 1970s. But the serial number looks like

?1 361797 where the ? is illegible

This serial # system was used much later (add 50 to the prefix) but not at the time of "Artist" engraving. Of course, the # may not actually be the year prefix + 50 system. It may just be a poorly done stamping where some of it has worn off.

Does the slide fit an 8H/88H?

No. This slide is compatible with Conn 78H and other small/medium horns. See photos for comparison...

The bell sections are a 1970 Elkhart 78H and the 79H. The slides are 78H on left and 79H on right. The only difference is the lower cork barrel on the 79H, which looks like it might be the same part as a Director?... And the outer brace lowered as a consequence. And outer tubes use different type of brass. Overall slide length is identical and crooks are identical.

I listed this horn prematurely. It is available as is for $850. On Tuesday I will take it to the shop and give it an ultrasonic bath, align valve, etc, ... and tweak slide if needed, and adjust slide/bell clearance. Price will then reflect the difference - about $150, probably.

I'm not sure it relates to this horn, but the 78 and 79h slides are slightly different. The 79h top brace is lower on the slide due to hand position with the trigger vs main bell brace. You can interchange them, but a 79h slide on a 78h will stretch out your grip. 78h slide on 79h bell will feel small.

Yes, I read and looked. I said I wasn't sure it applies to your horn. Maybe what I should have said was that there is a difference of brace placement between Elkhart 78/79. You seemed to be talking about the length of the cork barrels, which is different. I'm sorry you're annoyed, I wasn't trying to argue with you.

Sorry, hyperbolica, I think you caught me at a grumpy moment. Please forget I said anything. My apologies.

I've owned several 79h, including one like this. They play very similar to the original Elkharts, with slightly (very slightly) broader sound. They are more like an 88h with 525 slide, which is another favorite combination. Great horn for the money, and Greenbean is a totally stand-up kind of guy. Looks like it even comes with a nice case, which you don't see with 79h very much.

I want a 79H slide if anyone ever comes across one... Doug (I have a decent 78 slide that could swap)
