Would this work for a high school student? I am trying to help a friend here in Indianapolis find something with an f-attachment for her son as he enters 9th grade.

Probably a great horn, but maybe a bit much for the average 9th grader.

The thing is, even though it might be too large now, within a year or two the student will probably be just fine size-wise. I don't think buying something smaller now and then buying something again in 2 years is wise.

Personally, if the son doesn't plan on a music career, a smaller bore instrument like a Bach 36, Conn 79H, or Yamaha 684 (or 640 or 646) might be a good investment.

On the other hand, most college music majors will be required to have a large bore instrument and the Bach 42 or Selmer Largo would be suitably "professional" (no matter what the Shires/Edwards snobs say). I think I might prefer the Largo, but that's my personal feeling.

He's not a big kid, but his dad is ~6'2" so it's possible he could grow over the next couple years. It's pretty unlikely he'll be a music major in college, so keeping eyes open for a smaller bore instrument might be prudent.

I agree with "BurgerBob" This would be a better fit for the serious trombonist looking to major in music, but I don't see why not buy it if you have the money... Plus i'm in Fort Wayne, so instead of paying shipping you could come get it from me.

Try looking for something more like this (This is a great price btw, well... besides shipping)
