THis Bell has been Identified (Most Likely) as a Holton 280 from around 2000 plant closing.

Possibly NOS from the 70"s

Price is now $600 FREE CONUS Shipping

Surely you mean 281 - the 180 (and 280, if those ever existed) was long out of production by then.

Actually they were 280 bells. The holton plant that closed had a bunch of NOS FACTORY cut 280 bells for sale.back then. I have one, but the market was flooded as Badger state repair go them all and sold them on eBay. The stampings all say 280, so they are likely NOS from 1970s production.

Was there a difference in the 180 and 181 flares?

180 and 181 bellls are supposedly made on the same mandrel. 180s were usually considered better instruments than 181s, but that is subjective. 280 stamping just dates the bells.

It was neat that all these NOS bells got rehomed.

(the ones that have stampings, that is). Mine is completely bare. Chris S. also had one, I wonder if his is stamped at all.

I'm not sure I buy the 1970's part of that; Holton model number stampings are... not reliable. All kinds of slides with 180/181/183 that are mismarked from various years. I'm thinking it was just a batch of flares cut and ready to make a set of screw bell basses; but they closed the factory before making the batch. As I recall there were 10-20 of these out there.

FWIW, when I briefly had a 180 bell section hanging around for a project, my unmarked flare was the same length (which is slightly shorter than my Bach flares).

Cheers,

Andy
