I've enjoyed playing this horn with the original slide and with the medium bore slide, it was my main horn for the past four and a half years for basically anything which didn't absolutely need a valve. I've now gone in a slightly different direction with a customized horn which can also be setup as a straight large bore tenor and it would be a real shame to have this 8h sitting in the cupboard.

This 8h has the classic Conn shimmer in the upper range and is in general very flexible and forgiving throughout the whole range, it has rescued my poor attacks on a number of occassions, it really is an easy horn to play. The slide seems to have yellow brass outers, as far as I can tell. There are a couple of minor dings on the bell section and some lacquer wear but overall I think the bell section looks great. The slide has some wear on the end of the inners, it was like that when I got it from Mick Rath in 2018 and hasn't visibly developed since I got it. Despite the wear, the action is still good, maybe a conservative 7 out of 10 if regularly cleaned and lubed with trombotine. If it would bother the future owner, I suppose the inners could be replaced but in 4.5 years of playing it this never seriously crossed my mind.

An excellent partner to the 8h (or any other 8h/88h) is this SL2525 medium bore slide in very good condition. It has the stock leadpipes (two small shank, one large) and no serious trauma. There are a couple of very minor dents from normal use so as always when buying a used slide I would suggest the new owner's budgets for a quick slide job (minor dent removal and alignment). As it is, the action is a conservative 8 out of 10 so perfectly usable.

Shipping from Germany.

Pictures by request.

I'm looking for €1350 + shipping for the 8h, €925 + shipping for the 0.525" slide or make me an offer for both.

I bet that's an amazing horn. And I bet it sounds incredible!

I have a 74h, that I unfortunately will be parting with soon (just waiting to get a slide tube replaced). It's an 8.5" rose brass bell with a .525 slide and it's one of the best horns I've played. But I picked up a 79h that works better for my needs, and my 3b and 3bf are daily drivers for me.

Whoever buys this will be very happy.

Yeah, it does play well, for my taste especially with the .525“ slide.

It‘s quite surprising when you think about how many Conn options for medium bore there are, the 74h sounds like an interesting horn, along aside the more well known 78h/79h, as well as all the options opened up with an SL2525.

Here‘s a couple of pics:

The 8H now includes a ‚utility-grade‘ medium bore slide for €1350 incl. free EU shipping or 50% of worldwide shipping.

My best guess is the slide is a Blessing. It‘s pretty close in overall dimensions to the Elkhart 8h slide. It‘s a bit scratchy but usable after a cleaning and lubrication. The tenon fits well and the slide nut fastens a few turns (but not all the way) to make a solid enough fit. It plays well, not as good as the SL2525, which is also still available.

The Elkie 8h with a modern 525 slide is an amazing, do-anything combination. My #1 favorite thing to play. Super nimble, can play very light and delicate, perfect for chamber music, or go at it with orchestral stuff. Need a double jointed thumb to reach the main brace, but there are other ways to hold it.

As I bought this slide, mainly to be paired to an Abilene 88H bell, can you tell me more about the leadpipe and mouthpiece you're using with that combo?

After I got the slide, I tested the 3 leadpipes and picked the T pipe as the best option, and I've just left that in ever since. I find I usually like the longer pipes, but not too long. This was the best of the provided lot to me, and I haven't had any reason to want anything better (read: more expensive). They're cheap if you want to get one. There is also a Z pipe available if you really want a large shank mouthpiece with your 525 slide.

I typically use Doug Elliott XT104 F4 mouthpiece in my 88h/525 combo. I really like that combination.

Thanks a lot, hyperbolica, it's very helpful to me...

I already had an SL2525 and an SL2547, and always found the T leadpipe to be more centered and with a better slotting than the H which is more open...

The large shank leadpipe is the X, which I usually end up using...

LT E8 or F8 are what I use with this 88H/525 combo...

The T and H pipe ro me felt the same. Never bothered with the X pipe. In the end i got a Bach 36 pipe for my 2547 slide.

Bump and opening up the option to split.

Anyone looking for an excellent playing Elkhart 8h bell to make a nice ergonomic setup, or just to have a different option with their 88h slide, please send me a reasonable offer. It‘ll probably be much cheaper than hacking up an 88h into a convertible horn with solid soldered connections throughout.

Anyone got a spare bell they want to make whole or would like a backup Elkhart 8h/88h slide, get in touch!

I would say more of the value is in the bell so if you‘re kind enough to make an offer, please reflect that.

After a recent lesson learned in the complexity of non-EU exports, I‘m withdrawing the offer of shipping to non-EU countries.

Ok, issues with export paperwork now resolved (thanks to an export agency who can take of it on my behalf for about 25€)

Back open to non-EU buyers (and of course still open to EU ones).

If you think the price is too high, feel free to make an offer. This has to go.
