Looking for either a decent quality Bass Trumpet (resonant and in-tune for potential doubling in orchestra), or a fixer-upper valve trombone for teaching students/ practicing jazz on valves. Been searching the marketplaces and forums already. Anyone have something in mind, price reflecting quality? Cheers

I've yet to see a bass trumpet that is in tune through all valve combinations (just like I've never seen a trumpet that is in tune through all valve combinations). That's why they have 1st and 3rd valve saddles or triggers. They should do that for the bass trumpet as well.

For something to noodle on for jazz or to teach valves, look for a marching trombone or marching baritone. They are relatively common and pretty cheap.

The valve bone I have up for sale (likely Elkhart 5G iirc) is pretty good playing. I have other bell sections I can put on it too if you had something in mind. Happy to answer any questions you might have about it. I’d keep it but apparently having more than a dozen trombones is “too many” according to my wife

Thanks, I'd love to see photos, or a link to where you're selling it. DM me or send a link!

Thanks, I'm super curious about this too, since I haven't found a Bach bass trumpet anywhere. Which forum is it on, or can you DM me with a link? I appreciate the tip

I've got some other bell sections FS as well including a King 3BF bell section - which is also compatible with the existing tenon. The 606 bell plays pretty well with it though. It's probably fairly close to the original Conn bell, at least on paper.

Bachs are good. I've played a couple.

There's also an Elkhart Conn Bass Trumpet on the Brass Exchange. BTW, they usually only put 1st valve saddles (or rings) on Bass Trumpets, because the distance is too far to be useful on the 3rd valve slide by the time you're a full octave below the regular trumpet. I've seen some custom 3rd valve or main tuning slide levers put on some horns that work well because they can be set up to move the slide further than your finger is moving.

There is a Bach Mercedes valve bone in Avon, Ohio. Needs tuning slide work, but would be under $200. No idea if the owner would ship, though.

I have a Holton 58 Bass Trumpet I'd probably be willing to part with.

Very good condition. Comes with mouthpiece, and original case.

Thanks, that's a great option too!
