After a great deal of hand-wringing, I have decided to offer for sale my beloved and exceptionally rare Mt. Vernon 42G. As much as I love the Bach's, the Elkhart Conns have always been a better fit for me, and this horn deserves to be played, not hoarded.
The entire horn underwent a thoughtful and well-executed overhaul at some point in it's life before I took ownership. The stamping on the bell is factory crisp. Typical of the Mt. Vernon era, the bell is marked "42B" even though the bell is clearly gold brass.
There is no evidence of major trauma, but there are faint signs of dent and crease removal in the flare near the rim, as well as a few small dings. The rim wire is true and undamaged. The bell stem, tuning crook, and F-attachment tubing are exceptionally clean.
The action of the original Marston valve is as good as any valve I own, and it's a joy to use.
Todd Clontz did a great job setting up the slide, and the action is conservatively rated 8/10. Various small dings were removed from the outers. The crook is clean. The top inner has a couple of spots of smooth wear. The original leadpipe is present and in good shape.
The original case in serviceable condition is included in the sale.
I also have an exceptional (9/10) 18xxx Corp. LT42 slide that I selected specifically for use with this bell, chosen from several that DJ had on hand last year, and I can highly recommend the combination.
Price for the horn and case is USD$3850 plus shipping if paid by personal check or wire transfer, or USD$4000 plus shipping if paid with credit card. Add $800 for the Corp. LT42 slide.
I would prefer to find a buyer in the US, but if the horn hasn't sold to a US buyer in one week, I will consider international shipping.
More images available on request. Serious buyers please email me at the email address listed in my profile, as I rarely check PM's.
Thanks for having a look.
