Hi people,

a friend of mine found this photo and was wondering if I could identify the horn. I can't, but I also feel that I've seen a photo of a similar one somewhere. Can anyone helps please?

Holton Professional Model ca 1932-1936. Can't remember the model number off-hand, maybe No. 60? I can check a catalog later.

I always though that horn was an Olds. Wasn't that the horn that hung in Larry Minick's shop?

That tuning mechanism is interesting.

It's similar to the TIS method, but on the bell. The tuning slide bow is rather large.

Haven't seen one in the flesh. Wonder how they played.

But you have to admit, they looked pretty darn cool doing it.

Sorta like a DeLorean. Ornamental but not practical.

On the other hand we have the Conn 44H "razorbell" (Vocabell) that looked cool and actually played well.

Is that Stan Laurel, of Laurel and Hardy fame?

It looks like he knows how to hold and play the darned thing. :)

I don't know. If his playing was any good, why would someone be poking him in the eye with a violin bow?

Actually, the picture has been cropped so that Stan Laurel's best friend Oliver Hardy was removed. He is to Stan's right with the most priceless look on his face --- totally oblivious to the carnage his violin bow is inflicting. I LOVE those two guys !

Y'all haven't spend much time around violin players, have you?

Yes the "Vocabell" Conn 44h is a fine horn. Very thick bell and likewise the tuning slide. The whole horn is thicker. It's built like a tank and no bell-ring. Despite this the response is quick and it plays really well. Looks cool too.
