Corporation Era Bach 42

The great gear sell off continues!

Listed here, somewhat of a “Frankenbach.” Handslide serial puts manufacture date at ~1976 (22XXX), bell section dated to ~1977. Normally, you can’t really pin down an exact manufacture date for a Bach bell section alone, but this one was stamped (discreetly) 26XXX down by the pipe that joins the slide tenon. From what I can tell from the letters, it may have been ordered by a school back in the day, it’s also stamped “SAUSD” in the same place.

Classic Bach sound .547 bore, yellow brass, F-attachment, valve is quick and quiet w/ good compression, serviced at J. Landress Brass, NYC. Lots of lacquer wear (bell completely lacquer free). Little scars here and there from dent removal. No wear on inner slide tubes. Slide action is a conservative 8/10, everything runs smoothly w/ no catches, it’s just a touch noisy when bone dry. I think an alignment/consult with a good slide tech can remedy this, horn priced accordingly. I can also feel a tiny ding in the top inner tube around 3rd position. Based on weight comparison to comps and look of the bell engraving, I think the bell has been buffed down a bit, plays like a slightly thinner bell. Small ding in underside of F-attachment tubing, tried to capture in photos. Great instrument for an advancing student. For a professional looking to take an orchestral audition on it, I’d have it de-stressed (remount bell to get optimal resonance out of it). I may do this myself, but will leave the option to a serious potential buyer.
