Looking to buy a functional, very affordable bass for doubling. I’m finding myself more and more frequently having to travel to the dark side on occasion. It’s about high time to bite the bullet and find something for myself, rather than mooching off of my colleagues. Preferences are as follows:

-Made of metal

-moving slide section

-two triggers (F and Gb would be nice)

I hope that my incredibly particular and high requirements are enough to clarify any potential sellers concerns. I’m more than happy go into more details if needed. Jokes aside, I’m certainly not looking for my dream horn here and my price range is fairly limited but any help in finding something is greatly appreciated!

$700 is a tough budget.

Indeed.

If there's a horn out there which meets those requirements for $700 or less, you better see it before I do, and I don't even need another bass.

False listing?

Or relisted to get an even higher price.

In any case, a functional bass from a good brand (even listed at 100 bucks!) is not going to sell for less than 2500 in today's market.

Yeah, $700 probably won’t happen. For reference I just bought a bass sight unseen and it needs split triggers, has a slide which isn’t playable, and the valves need some bumper stop screws. Oh and it is ugly looking. And I paid $1000 for it. Redeeming factor: Bach Corp 50 dependent valves. I am now going to have to spend over $1000 to get it where I want it. I would save up more personally if you want a bass that won’t frustrate you.

When I shared this, the bid was around $550

Yes, it actually sold a few days ago for 3K and was relisted. Like I said, any time you see a horn like this with a low bid... it won't stay there!

Yes but anyone knows it won’t sell for that. But at least the guy looking knows that now.

I had an independent Wessex bass with serviceable axial flow valves and a pretty decent slide pass through my hands for a bit (but not much) more than that budget, at today’s exchange rate.

It was metal, had a reasonable slide and F/Gb valves. It got a bit shouty at FF and the valves needed regular oiling but otherwise was a perfectly usable instrument.

If you don’t want to save up for something like double that budget, Wessex is worth a look.

For $700, used you're looking at single valve basses and Chinese basses (Mack Brass etc.).

If there's nothing out there right now and you want one soon, a new [url=https://www.gear4music.com/us/en/Woodwind-Brass-Strings/Coppergate-Intermediate-Bass-Trombone-By-Gear4music/NYQ]Coppergate 7B clone is worth a look. It's $450 and shockingly had good reviews back on TTF and everywhere else I've seen, so it could be worth it to have a functional bass.

I'll second that. I bought a Copper gate with shipping damage simply for the case....it was that cheap. I gave it to our second trombone ( minus the case of course) and he has given it to a young player. I fixed the damage and it played pretty well. I could have used it at work in an emergency.

I’ve got a Studio Schiller in-line 10 1/2 in bell near mint I can sell ya for $700. The horn plays great for me and I was very surprised with its versatility. This isn’t the heritage ($500 7B clone) but their hire end Yamaha 882 clone.

There's a Holton tr181 from Japan on ebay for $1650 with free shipping . It's not $700, but it looks like a good deal. I've bought from some of these Japanese sellers, and it's either a ridiculously expensive price or a cheap one, nothing in between, it seems. The shipping is amazingly fast.

How's that shiny new MT Vernon working for you? I was super hyped when I saw you starting that project!
</QUOTE>

Not very shiny! Since it's raw brass, but it plays like a dream. A holy grail trombone.

Met a great gent who sold me his Holton TR180. Stellar slide, custom F/D conversion. Plays great. I walked into that interaction looking for a horn. Came out with a great bass and a new friend.
