Frankenbone

Got to fooling around with my herd and discovered an interesting combination. I married the slide from a '47 Recording to the bell of a '46 Studio. Popped in a gold plated Denis Wick 10cs and found a set-up I really like. Full, mellow tone in all registers. What other Frankenbones have y'all created?

My favourite large bore setup at the moment is a frankenbone:

Bach LT42 slide

Custom-made rotary F valve section with modular fittings

Bach 42 tuning slide

Shires red brass bell

I also like another frankenbone setup for small bore:

King 3B slide

Benge 170 bell section

Guess I like the combo of nickel silver slide with a red/gold brass bell (coincidentally also my bass has this combo, a Yamaha 612Rii)

Massive difference. Way quicker response. Changes the sound a little, takes some dullness away.

From "The Rick Bartkus Collection" is this mashup of a Getzen Custom .500" bore tenor with a copper bell made by Kanstul and the conversion work was done at the Kanstul factory in Anaheim, Ca. The Getzen slide is a lightweight nickel-silver and the warmth of the copper bell (one piece construction) really works better than the Getzen bell did. More balanced tone, less harsh.

Oh boy. This could take awhile since... I don't recall having a totally stock hon for the last decade :lol: A few highlights:

My main classical horn for something like 6 years was

Slide: Yamaha YSL646 upper + YSL8820G crook+ lower w/ Conn 52H leadpipe, threaded for Shires collars

Valve: Dependent F/D valve section w/ a Bach 36 rotor + Tubing + a .547 off some German bass w/ 88H tubing w/ a Schilke neckpipe

Tuning Slide: Shires SY

Bell: Shires 2RVET7

Still have that one, but did let the rotor get away. Played absolutely wonderfully. Original goal was to make a faux-bass with a Holton 9" bell I had but it never quite worked as a bass for me beyond pretty light stuff so I let that go when I had Jeff over at Long Island Brass make me an inline valve section for a Shires I pieced together. Now, I play the above horn with a dual-bore rotor and a 7YLW8 and an "X" tuning slide, usually. And the bell is now on a...

Slide: Edwards 547 w/ Bass Crook w/ Conn Remington leadpipe

Valve: Edwards neckpipe with... Shires bell posts and a Shires Tuning slide receiver

Tuning Slide: Shires SY

Bell: 2RVET7

I'd complained about this horn before but I think I finally have it dialed in with the Remington leadpipe. Can't believe how cheap the stock CS pipes are still.

My big bore Helmut Voigt alto (bell 19 cm) with a shortened 36 Bach slide. This combination work fine. Better than with the original Voigt slide.

Tried another experiment today. Bell from '46 Studio and slide of a '46 Special. Bach 17C seems to make a nice lead sound.
