Hi all,
I'm helping a friend clear some horns out of his storeroom at his music store. One of those horns is a really nice Olds S-23 dual rotor bass bone. The bell is in fantastic shape. Original F and E dependant valve setup. It's valve wraps are flush with the rest of the bell section. 10 inch yellow brass bell and tubing. Side by side thumb paddles. There are a few small dings in the bell section. I took pics of what I could find.
The slide is TIS. The previous owner had a ring put on the hand brace for leverage. Unsure if the tuning brace is stock. Slide moves well. I haven't cleaned ot yet but it's a solid 9 at the moment. Dual bore .554/.565 slide. I haven't had a chance to give the horn a good honking but it's really cool to see such an old horn in great shape.
Comes with a pretty heavy woodshell case that appears to be original.
Asking $900. Buyer pays actual shipping. Since this is a sale for a friend I would prefer paypal goods and services be used with the buyer covering the 3% fee. If you live in the L.A. area i will happily deliver to you to save time and shipping costs.
I'll have pics up soon.
Any questions feel free to ask.
If anyone is looking for classic alto saxes (Martin, Beuscher and Holton) I have 1 of each from the 20s and 30s I'm helping him sell.
Thanks

Can you send me some photos? Also - why do you think the brace may be non-stock? Sounds like a neat horn.

Last pics. I'll have an udated description later. But my first post is pretty accurate outside of the 3 or 4 dings on the bell.

That's a stock brace. Olds went back and forth between curved and straight third braces a couple times.

It's hard to believe that there is no interest in this classic vintage bass from the good old days in Fullerton. Olds trombones are very robust, and this one is pretty rare. It looks great, especially for nearly 60 years old. :good:
Someone needs to be playing and enjoying this trombone. :clever:
(It might play better with an Olds 21 (née Olds G) true bass trombone mouthpiece.)

These are great horns. I've had one like it. People are just not into this kind of bass any more. The slide is heavy, it has TIS which scares people for some reason. I had one with a smaller bell. Personally, this has all the grit you want for big band, and anything that needs a solid, big, low sound with maybe a little edge on it here and there. It's just not the "slide euphonium" kind of sound, and you might have to use 6th or 7th positions to get Cs and Bs. The dual bore really makes it in my opinion.
I played my Olds bass in an orchestra that played Holst's Perfect Fool. There's a section in the middle where 3rd bone and tuba just rock it on some time signature that totally goes against the grain of the rest of the orchestra. I remember just laying it down with this tuba player.
This is a perfectly fine bass trombone that doesn't fit the mold of what's currently popular. Very powerful instrument.

I have an Olds S-23 Bass with a 10" bell. It has an alternate extension so that it can also be a F and D Dependent bass which is very useful in today's world.
