Have a look at this horn on ebay. It only has 2 days to run so be quick. I imagine it is horrendous to play and I am not saying this is a very desirable horn but golly is it interesting. It clearly belonged to a DIY technician or someone who had a technicion that would do whatever he asked.. Like it or loath it the more you look at this the more interesting it becomes. I'm not sure but looking at the bell, what I took for interesting engraving might well be soldered shaped sheet on the bell? Is that a Doug Elliot shank soldered on to a cut down denis Wick mouthpiece. Maybe the brace at the bottom was where Saur got his inspiration? (kidding) Is the plating on the outside tube of the upper slide and not the inner slide? Interesting hand rest on the slide, Genuine Ed Thayer valve. Like I say sooo interesting.

The brace on the slide crook is because the lower slide is reversed - inner is soldered to crook, outer captive at the hand brace - one of Those Very Clever Ideas that comes up from time to time when people dream of conicity at any cost

The knuckleduster grip and appliqué bell work are well-timed festive touches

That's a head-scratcher, alright - but it may actually play quite well. I'm surprised the seller didn't include some sort of explanation.

That almost looks like a trumpet mouthpiece that has a trombone cup soldered to it or something. I'd be very curious if there is some kind of story behind all of that

So the lower slide is sort of free-floating. Wonder what that does to slide action, alignment, and wear? :idk:

That seller never does more than the briefest, most basic descriptions - as far as I've been told they get truckloads of beat-up school horns in a warehouse that they list a few at a time. They don't go through each more than a cursory examination and snapping a few basic pics, and with the amount of horns being pushed through their eBay store every day, I don't blame them. I bought a horn from them and had no problems. You just have to go in knowing that you'll probably have to take the horn to the vet before you can play it. Case in point...the horn I got is currently with John Sandhagen getting resurrected.

Keep your bids very low and know that you're getting a beater to the highest degree, and you're good. I planned to do exactly that with that Thayer trombone before the listing was taken down, actually.

What a difference a good tech can make to a horn. Quinn will have made a good profit on this despite the techs time spent on it if he sells it for the asking price of course. Better pictures this timee. Makes you think maybe you should have bought it first time round!!... Still find it difficult to take it seriously but cant help admiring it at the same time!... Doug

Notice the outrigger counter weight, to counter the rotational moment. I would suggest it should be on a longer stalk, but hey, it's the first time I've seen someone else do this.
