A tab for new member introductions for vetting people would be nice. As a new member I don’t have anything to post about at this time, but I’d like to be vetted.

I play trombone & tuba in Roux Carré jazz band, 2nd trombone in the Civic Orchestra of Baton Rouge, and tuba in the COBR Brass Quintet. My next adventure is learning E♭ tuba. And also getting my soon to be 4 yo a pBone mini alto trombone and seeing what I can teach him. My low brass professor said you should start kids out on an alto trombone. I’ll start him with ear training and teach him how to read music when he gets older. I also have 13 & 14 yo daughters that play oboe and horn.
My main instrument is tuba, but played bass trombone my junior year in high school some 24 years ago. I’ve been playing trombone again for a year now and it’s coming back quite well.
I started college as a music major, but switched to engineering. I have a B.S. in Engineering with a Minor in Music, and M.S. in Engineering. I’m a Telecommunications RF Engineer and that minor in music helped me get that job.

I think this is a great idea!
I am a college trombonist; 2nd year BM at Indiana University. My primary equipment is a Bach 42A, Conn 88h Elkhart, and a Yamaha 671 Alto. I occasionally doodle around on euphonium, but I don't currently have one.

Hi All,
I've just joined this forum today. I studied trombone seriously in college and, for a time, playing made me a decent living...then, well, life. I'm consistently practicing again and am here to learn and be inspired.
I play a nice "Corporation" Bach 16 and am interested in acquiring (or building) a convertible Bach 36.
Thanks,
JJ

Since I've just joined today.....
My experience has been all jazz/blues/pop related. After finishing my degree and teacher's certificate I worked 42 years with school bands. I preferred the first year students as they had no bad habits yet! Chose to leave the job when the pandemic hit - no fun trying to teach beginners through a computer screen. Coming here for general info on horns and thinking I need to downsize my collection. Got rid of all the student level horns of every instrument type I had gathered over the years but wanting to fix up and or simply sell many of my remaining trombones. I've discovered it's difficult to play more than one at a time!
Looks like a very comprehensive site!

Welcome to TromboneChat. Your stable looks like a fun collection. Just bring a different trombone to each event!
If you stick with this site, you may end up increasing your stable, not downsizing it!

Hey all, :hi:
Just up late looking at new horns and thought I'd drop by and say hello. Went to music school for a year and then joined the air force. Now I play with the Heartland winds and make ensembles by myself for fun.
I've been playing on a Bach 42b for 25 years with a Warburton mouthpiece.
Glad to be a part of this endeavor.

Hi,
Long time lurker, first time poster, I've been playing trombone for nearly 25 years, mainly in a wind/marching band. From time to time I also play other older tenor valve instruments in brass sextets, and a tuba because who doesn't want to play the tuba?

Didn’t have an urge to play tuba until about 20 years ago, it was the only option for a Christmas brass ensemble. (Long story, basically BBb only tuba available, I was only valved instrument player that could read bass clef.) 3 day crash course self-taught worked out ok. Euph was my primary instrument at the time, basically just had to learn reading the low notes. I was hooked. Have an old Conn 20J now, typically in storage until Christmas time. Wouldn’t want to play weekly, but annually it’s a fun change from trumpet and trombone.

Hello all!
I’ve been here for a little bit but as many have said, I haven’t had much to post about and would love to get vetted so I can see pictures on posts and all that.
I’m a trombone/tuba player and band director in Minnesota. Got my undergrad in music education at the University of Minnesota Duluth and got a masters in trombone performance at University of Missouri Columbia. I currently play on a “Custom S” (Presently Lake City) alto trombone, Conn 6H, Conn 88HO, and an Edwards B-502I and borrow a Kanstul Contra from one of the local high schools for tuba gigs. I play on pretty much all Hammond mouthpieces, JF2A, 13M, 11MXL, and 21BXL. Currently play on a Conn Helleberg tuba mouthpiece but after seeing the new Hammond line of tuba mouthpieces looking at getting into those.
Thanks for making this thread and hopefully will get vetted soon!

Finally found my way over here. I started bone in 1969. Around 1972, I got my Conn 48H Constellation and that's been my workhorse since. Along the way, my grandfather gave me his old Eb tuba he had played in his "oompah" band. It is a York Monster Eb tuba with Hi pitch & Lo pitch slides, built around 1910. Had the slides unstuck (he felt he didn't need to tune!), taught myself to play and formed the "Jolly Coppersmiths" in high school (a really poor polka band - but we had fun and had some real gigs!) I still fiddle around on that but don't have many opportunities to really play it.
Today, I play a Getzen Eterna II 747 large bore tenor in the Bend in the River Big Band (formed by alumni of my college over 30 years ago) and I use my 48H for 1st trombone in what was formerly the 3M Symphony Orchestra (yes, that 3M Company) which is now the East Metro Symphony Orchestra - a non-profit group. I usually use the 48H for anything else that comes up.
In the stable, I also have a Chinese alto, a student line flute (I don't play), an F.E. Olds Studio model trumpet (I also don't play), and another very old horn, a Holton Revelation trombone which also has Hi pitch and Lo pitch tuning slides and a friction fit slide. It's rough, but it is playable.

I started bass trombone in 2012 in my highschool big band jazz ensemble on an old independent benge horn, then played on a vincent bach 50B2 until I graduated. When I went off to college I got a silver plated single thayer F attachment vincent bach 50 that I now play in the Salt Lake Symphonic Winds. I started on a bach 1 1/2 g and found out pretty quick my tuba lips preferred a 1g and I've been happy on that ever since.

Hi all! I've been lurking on the forums for a while now, finally trying to get posts in for vetting.
I played trombone from about 2007 - 2018, picking up bass trombone around 2010 and using it throughout high school and college, including during marching band. Now that I have a stable job, I'm looking to get back into playing in local bands and upgrade from my cheaper knockoff horns to something more substantial.
Happy to be here on the forums and diving back into music!

I'm a new member, and I need a 3rd post before I can use the search function.
I live in Phoenix, Arizona. I'm a retired engineer, and since retirement, I've finally started working harder at improving my trombone skills. I play in both a community college concert band and a community college big band.

Here's my third post on the forums. I'm an enthusiastic amateur rather than professional musician. I've been playing in a "street band" with college friends for the last 3+ decades, along with various other smaller groups, community bands, and 1-off horn sections. I'm not known for nimble playing or gorgeous tone; I get called when the assignment is to play really loud and really high for an hour or two. Some recent repetitive stress tendinopathy in my left elbow has me looking for a lighter daily player than the Benge 190F that has been my only horn for close to 25 years.

I am trying to attain three posts in order to gain full access to the wonders of trombonechat, so apologies for my rambling...
I used to play orchestrally, until about 14 years ago, when I left to focus on teaching full time...I still get the odd gig when people get desperate enough. I have recently decided to start (restart) doing a masters in trombone, and look forward to seeing what I can learn from the chat regarding repertoire for recitals and such.

I'm also trying to attain the magic three posts. I'm not the trombonist, but my son (grade 9) is *really* into it. He's been playing a nasty Yamaha student trombone for the past 4 years. The other day I told him what I paid for it (I think it was $80), and now he suddenly realizes that "my trombone is crap!" So I'm on the hunt for a new trombone! I want to buy used and I love the idea of buying one from a pro on trombonechat!

Salutations!
I played trombone in my school days before switching to tuba partway through high school because it seemed like it would be less work. I hadn't touched a horn since 2007 up until a couple weeks ago when I impulse-bought a used Cool Wind trombone because why not?
I'd always thought it would be fun to have a tuba at home to noodle around on, but tubas are expensive. I figured a cheap trombone run through an octave pedal, though, might just scratch that itch. I've been playing around a bit with a minimum cost/effort electric trombone setup, but that's a topic for another thread, methinks.
Anyways, looking forward to pestering you lot with my harebrained schemes and general lack of talent.

Thanks for the add.
Been away from the trombone for close to 40 years. I have a couple of grand kids that will be ready for music in 4 or 5 years and I hope to hook them into music better than I did thier parents.

Hello! I've been lurking a bit here. But I joined TTF over two decades ago when I still in high school! Even though I got an engineering degree and working in tech since college, I never stopped playing through college and well into adulthood and now, where I play in many community ensembles. I'll play until I can't anymore, and I'm glad this forum is still around in some way.

Howdy,
I've spent the last few years lurking via account-less viewing. I started playing trombone back in 2001 until about the end of 2008-09 timeframe. Ended up joining the Navy and became heavily invested in the tech and cybersecurity realm, but I've always made sure to keep my King DG Bassbone with me. My oldest daughter just started band this year and decided that she wanted to follow in her daddy's footsteps and play trombone. So we just picked up a Yamaha YSL-354 for her. The spark has been reignited for me seeing how excited she is to learn.

Hey all,
I'm a high school senior that loves the long funny piece of tube I chose to play since fifth grade. I believe that trombone is the best instrument because yes.
I enjoy playing in my jazz band and concert band and will be section leaders for both this year.
I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can to improve before my high school career reaches the double barline.

Hello everyone, longtime lurker, firsttime poster,
Like a lot of people here, I am not a professional musician and I have a regular day job in engineering. I pretty much stopped playing in college, but have been getting involved in the community music scene where I live. It's been quite a few years since I last played in an ensemble but I'm excited to get back to it!

Hello, I've been having fun playing trombone for the last 40 years, currently in a local big band and jazz combo. Also, I'd like to add another horn to my collection, figured this is a legit place to find one.

Hi all, thanks for creating this new members introduction area. I used to read the forums when I was in middle school and early high school. I studied at Vanderbilt, and Yale and am now a freelancer in Annapolis/Baltimore, MD.
Which means I work a day job and play whatever gigs I can!
I play:
Shires with dependent rotors, bass trombone
Shires Trubore, large tenor
King 4B, my practice axe for tenor
Martin (I think Committee?) circa 1920s, anything with swing and ledgers.
Glad to be back on the forum, though I have to admit the site is more difficult than I remember.

Hi Everyone!
I'm a trombone player from Edmonton, Canada. I'm currently playing a shires tenor, a Rath bass, and a Bach alto.... maybe now that I've posted twice I will be able to change what I'm playing more easily.

Hello,
New member here on trombone chat. I recently started to play again, just trying to get a decent tone and working on some scales. This has always been a great resource going back to ttf. Glad to see it's still going.

Hey all, I guess I'm what you'd call a "comeback" player. Majored in Trombone Performance in the late 80s at Cal State Northridge. Did road bands and cruise ships in my 20s, then dropped out of playing for a long time. Been working as an electric bassist in AZ for the last several years, and picked up my horn again this last year. Working on getting back in the game...have my first trombone gig in 25 years next week!

Lapsed low brass player here :)
I played trombone and tuba through undergrad and a couple years after. I moved across the country for a physics PhD in 2014 and never found a group to play with. I kept my tuba and trombone, but they sat idle for several years. I'm finally getting back into playing, hoping to join a community ensemble once I feel confident again.
I also mess around with modular synthesizers and live coding (max/msp, supercollider). If anyone else is in the overlap between brass and electronic music let me know! Would love to chat about how you bridge those interests.

Returning after many, many years, wow, how the Bass Trom world has changed! :amazed:
I'm loving listening to all the current players on Youtube, some true inspiration.

Hello!
Gregg here. I’ve played, with a few lapses, since 1990. I played in HS and college and a variety of community groups since my college years.
I’m now in eastern NC, have joined a community orchestra, and am working to get my chops back.
I’m glad to have found this group!

I've been a lurker here for a bit, played all through high school and college, and did the good 'ol Texas all-state stuff in high school in 2001,2002 and 2003. I dropped out of college after a year of Trombone Performance to tend to personal things back at home, picked the horn up a few times here and there but never long enough to really make a difference until about 3 months ago. I had some pretty bad health issues (blood clots that turned into pulmonary embolisms) and the specialist said doing things to help out my lungs would be beneficial, so I chose picking up the horn more often over adding more cardio to my routine. So far my lung function has improved a great deal and the Drs are all happy with my progress. I started playing in a few local community groups, my church orchestra, and a local paid orchestra so I'm keeping busy and just trying to really get my chops back. 20 years was a long time to be away but it seems things are coming back much quicker than I thought.

A thread for intros is a good idea—I wish I’d seen it before I posted one in the wrong place. So, here’s a second try…
I started on baritone in junior high school, half a century ago, and picked up trombone in high school. Went to music school in my early 20s, got a degree in jazz performance and played pretty intensively through the mid ’90s, then set the horn aside for a couple decades.
Started playing again about 8 years ago and that was a sobering lesson in being older and slower. But I’m back to maybe 75 or 80% and starting to play with some interesting and challenging bands. At the same time, it’s amazing how little I know about playing the trombone. Did I forget or just never know? I’m not sure. Thus my interest in this forum!

Hey all,
I am coming back to trombone after about 15 years.
I work as a special education teacher and I find trombone helps me destress at the end of the day.
I play a 1938 Olds Super.

Hi all,
I'm an old bone player, on-again off-again since around 1975. Played in HS, did not play in college, picked back up again in graduate school to play with a "community" group made up of lots of alumni from local-ish college bands around the San Francisco Bay Area. The group is called California Repercussions. That group has been a blast, but I've been on a break from it for a couple of years, and am just now working to pick up where I left off. I'm going to retire within the next year or so, so I'm expecting to have more time/energy for practicing and potentially joining some other local groups.
I'm in the Sacramento area, so if there are any other bone folks floating around here and you want to get into some duets or something, reach out!

Hi everyone,
I'm Mike in Edinburgh, Scotland. I play bass trombone in a few local groups, mostly orchestras and big bands. I've lurked on this forum for years and learned a huge amount here, so I thought it might be nice to get a bit more involved.

G'day folks. Kevin from Rockhampton (Aust) here. I used to frequent The Trombone Forum back in the day and only recently found this site. I learnt tbn back in high school in mid-70s and have played in community bands ever since - nearly 40 years now. I now play either tenor or bass, depending on who's missing from rehearsal, including covering for the Eb bass player.
Even though I'm well into retirement, I still enjoy learning.

Hello,
I originally played trombone in junior high/high school from 1958 to about 1963. When arthritis in my fingers caused a drastic tapering off of my guitar playing, I picked up trombone again about a year ago. I joined a local Colorado community band last September, and enjoy playing more now than in my beginning years. I hope to get to the point where I can play New Orleans/Trad jazz one of these days.
Through band and this site, I'm finding there is a lot more to learn than I was aware of in H.S. pep band, and expect to enroll in private lessons before too long.

Hi from Northern NSW Australia. I used to be a member on the old TTF but don't remember what my user name was.
I've been hanging around here for a while as a guest but decided I should join again. I generally prefer to look and listen so probably won't post very often - I need one of those "introverted (aspie) but willing to discuss trombone" shirts
I'm strictly an amateur player who plays for enjoyment. I started playing in 1981 when the trombone chose me at age 11 - band conductor gave it to me because my arm was long enough. first time I showed it to my dad and blew a note he said it sounded like a foghorn :o  Have had periods where I didn't play for a few years, and have often been in bands where I was the only trombone.
My partner also plays which is great I - he started on trumpet as a kid, but has now seen the light and come over to the dark side
I play 1st in a local community concert band, and my partner plays second.
I play bass trom in our local community orchestra and my partner plays second.
I help out sometimes with another little local concert band on tuba but don't always go to rehearsals - there are some ... difficult .... personalities there
I've been playing bass trombone in our local community orchestra for about 7-8 years now - absolutely love it. wish I had been introduced to the bass trombone earlier (I got the chair because our sometimes bass trombone moved away and I had a large bore trigger - a beautiful mid 1970's silver 42B I purchased off DJ through the old trombone forum - in the days when international shipping to down under was still a reasonable price) My partner plays the 42 now and loves it as much as I do. I decided I wanted a double trigger bass - love the low notes and I find going low easy which my partner hates as he'd love to be able to play low but is pretty dismal at it :) So I bought a Xeno 830 which I absolutely love. its light (for a bass), easy to play, sounds great.

Hello Everyone,
I was a member here before but it has been so long I forgot all of my account information. I am primarily a bass trombone player, but I often double on tenor trombone and euphonium. I am currently a Middle School music teacher in Southern California and enjoy playing every time I can. I am mostly playing on a Shires bass. I look forward to being vetted so I can buy more mouthpieces (that I might not need!)

Welcome back to the trombone community Brennan.
If you're within driving distance from Santa Ana, you should consider joining a bunch of us (typically 30 or more) at <I>Bones West</I> - every Saturday morning from ~9:00am to 11:30am at Musician's Association (AFM) Local 7. Lots of great charts for bass trombone (as well as tenor) - legit and jazz.

Hello all trombone enthusiast. I finally pulled the trigger on registering because i want to ask for advice about a weird old duo gravis bass trombone with one trigger i found in my bands instrument storage. Before that, a bit about my self.
Im 24 years old from Denmark (so excuse my poor writing) who loves playing music in my spare time.
I mostly play the bass trombone, and tenor trombone nowadays, but i started on euphonium. I play in various different bands and orchestras. I play bass trombone in a old time jazz bigband, a small fusion jazz ensemble, and in my marching bands marches through the cities and also our tattoo show. I play my "big" tenor trombone in a New Orleans inspired street parade band, and in a small band where we play for special occasions. I've played piano since i was 9, and started learning percussion at age 15 when i started in marching band before switching to brass.
Right now i also play mallet percussion in my marching bands concert band, because we have a lot of low brass players and no percussion player who could read sheet music.
I've always "lurked" on these forums and different facebook groups, but never actually contributed much. Denmark is quite small and doesn't have a that many brass repair shops, that does custom work, and none of them sells top-end instruments. There's not much online presence in the Danish brass community, so I'm looking forward to learn from the experiences of people from all over. Especially overseas, where marching band culture is just amazing. My marching band has participated in the Calgary Stampede a number of times, and I've had the pleasure of going twice already. Experiencing Canada, and the stampede, has been some of the best experiences of my life.

Hi. New member just joined. Bass trombone player of some forty years now (how did that happen ?!). I was a long-time member of the old OTJ forum, but had stopped playing a while back due to embouchure issues, so did not register here. Doing a bit of playing again, so I thought it as good a time as any to get back online to see how the world of trombone playing has advanced in my absence.

April West here. This is my first post, ever, to any chat. Here goes. I am freelancing in San Diego, mostly older jazz and R & B. I have a gig coming up at a great local festival, Gator By The Bay. I have to arrange a set of songs for 4 trombones. Gonna be awesome!
I just registered here hoping to find someone who can tell me where to buy the Slide Hampton arrangement of "Lester Leaps In" (from World of Trombones album). Help?
Now that I'm registered, I'm sure I'll visit more. Thanks!

Hey y'all. My name is Devin Roark. I'm primarily a bass trombonist but I've been playing more tenor and tuba lately as well. Graduate of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Stetson University. Studied with Pete Norton among many other great musicians. Originally from Pensacola, Florida, I currently live in Cleveland, Ohio where I freelance as a trombonist as well as a baritone vocalist. I'm the bass trombonist of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra in Sandusky. I have a day job in tech. Thanks for letting me join!

Hi. I'm a trombone player from NJ, but grew up playing primarily in LA. I have a question. Is it considered good form or bad form to post recordings of your own, versus recordings of other players? Don't want to start off on the wrong foot here. Thanks.

Hello!
I've been going through the trombone forum since high school and have had a trombone chat account for about a year now but I'm just now needing to post! I'm currently a bass trombonist studying at UNT and I grew up and learned how to play in Las Vegas.

Hi, this is my first post. I played trombone in Jr and Sr high school in symphonic, marching, and jazz bands as well as in the local youth symphony orchestra. That was from 1970-1979. I stopped playing regularly when I went to college. Now, after 45 years, I have decided to start playing again, just for fun. I have been surprised by how much I remember and by how bad I am!
I loved playing and hope to become proficient enough to enjoy it again.

Hello,
I'm a 3rd year Capital University student studying music technology and trombone. I found out about this group through a community trombone choir and I'm excited to get more involved. I've been playing tenor trombone for around a decade at this point, and picked up bass a semester ago. One of the things I'm hoping to get into soon is running my trombone through pedals.
I'm excited to talk more!!!

Hey y'all - finally joining _my people_ to look for a small-bore horn for jazz band. Normally I play a K-valved Bach 42 in concert band.

I have been in teaching brass for a good number of years. My major instrument was (is) trombone and I have a King 2B, Bach 16, Olds Ambassadpr, a Martin Committee model, and a Reynolds Argenta. My favorite mouthpiece is a Bach 22C though I used an 11 C for a time. I also have a conical bore Coutieier with reverse slide that is a real beast. For reasons i will not go into, I play left-handed which makes using a horn with the F-attachment a bit awkward. I have been playing
for over 70 years.

Welcome Alfonso. I'm new to trombone chat, but I'm not new to trombone. Sounds like you're having fun and playing well.
How long have you been playing?
What country do you want to study in?
What are some of the ways the forum has helped you?

Hello! I actually created an account a while ago under my Gmail email, and it won't send me a password reset, and says it's activated, but doesn't seem to be. Not sure what's up... anyway this is under a different email address that I don't use much.
I'm from the midwest. I played in school and some in college. I was a music major but changed to an IT career. The low brass professor took the joy out of it for me and I thought it was a one-off until I read some reviews online about him a year or so ago. Turns out.. it wasn't just me - he killed a lot of dreams. Life got busy, and I stopped playing. My horn was a Yamaha YSL-643R. Had a family, things were tight, so I sold it to a music store. Still somewhat regretting that as I loved that horn. Now.. it's almost 30 years later. Youngest daughter is a music major at a better college with some very welcoming professors. She's a euphonium and trombone player. She encouraged me and we did a quartet for church one Christmas with her trombone. I then played in a pep-band get together for the K-12 that I work at.. and then joined a local community band. I needed a horn of my own then, so I found an Olds Ambassador A20 from 1972. The community band has been great, and I got a small trombone choir for some Christmas carols as a filler for a MS/HS concert between groups. I found I missed having a large bore horn (and I was told I can't have more than one fancy trombone from the Mrs) so I sold the Ambassador to an awesome musician in Detroit and then... found a basically factory new YSL-643 on ebay - it must have been stored for. years in someone's closet as there's not a scratch on it and one tiniest spot of lacquer wear on a hand brace.
Nice to officially meet everyone!

Hi everyone! Some of you might remember me from the old Trombone Forum. I got pretty busy with my teaching career and then COVID hit and suddenly it's been four years since I (seriously) played. But I got invited last-minute to a gig and had a ton of fun so I'm getting back in the swing of things. My instrument is an axial-flow Shires tenor (ca. 2006, apparently this is important now!), and I'm currently in-between bass trombones but looking to get a new one.

Hey everyone,
Local to the PNW and just trying to get back into playing after a lengthy beak, as life happens and I lost major focus on musical study. I have a Conn 88HCL that I got in high school (graduated there in 2008 - how time flies) and just took it in to the tech for the first time since probably 2010 for some much needed service. What I've been able to learn from this website has helped me get motivated to get back into things and practice regularly, though I'm not in any groups or lessons. What a tremendous resource! Looking forward to more. Thanks

Hi all,
I've been lurking the forum for a while and finally decided to dive in and officially join. Seems like this thread would be a good start for my first post! I started playing the trombone in middle school and continued through my college years before going dormant from trombone playing for many years. I've recently rediscovered my passion for trombone and have spent the last several months starting from "scratch" and re-teaching myself everything from the simple basics of time signatures and counting rhythms, all the way up to practicing exercises I used to play out of Arban's and Rochut for my private studies.
Looking forward to participating on the forum!

Welcome! I followed a similar path, where I took a long time off and had to start from scratch again. I think you'll find there are a number of us here. Glad to have you! :)

Hi everyone,
I played in marching and jazz band in high school and college and I’m now returning to the trombone after a 30+ year hiatus, having been inspired by my son who plays trumpet in his high school jazz band. I have loved getting back into playing and listening again and have found this forum very informative. Thanks all!!!

Feisty old guy here. I played trombone in grade school, but didn't have the patience back then. I do remember it being a fun instrument to play, and often wished I'd stuck with it. I have played electric bass for some time, so have a reasonable background to build off of, and (PRAISE THE LORD) I never got into TAB notation so have decent familiarity with standard notation and the bass clef.
I have a teacher and an OK starter trombone and look forward to building proficiency. One think I'm finding fun and different is how physical it is to play a horn. I feel much more part of the instrument than with an amplified stringed instrument. (That's fun in its own way!)

Hi everyone
It's lovely to read that your son's brass playing drove you to reclaim your passion of the tuba after all these years. I'm glad you found the forum useful. Keep enjoying your musical journey, and thank you for sharing it with us!

Hello from the Netherlands!
After coming across this forum so often while looking stuff up online, I thought I might as well make an account.
Currently playing mostly in local big bands on my small bores :)

Hello! My account has been active for a few years now, but I've never had a reason to make a post until now, and I really ought to get my three posts in so I can pursue a classifieds listing  I'd been racking my brain for awhile trying to come up with something significant to post, and I'm glad I found this thread started by someone in a similar situation. I sure hope posting comments counts towards that number.
I've been playing for nearly a decade, with the most significant thing to show for it likely being the number of horns I've amassed over that period of time. I don't play as much as I'd like to anymore due to work, but I've been thinking about shifting my priorities around and focusing on music, like I'd wanted to for a number of years. I just recently joined a community band that has rehearsals I can actually make it to with my funky work schedule, so hopefully the horn is on its way to being a bigger part of my life again.

Inferring that 816 refers to KC/ Western MO area?
Lived there for 21 years before moving to where I am now (S.Carolina).
Had similar history - played through college then did not at all for 20 years until I gave into the itch.
After 20 years I think I played long tones and scales for a month just to get some chops back.
When you are ready, there are several community bands in that area to check out for an outlet to play. :good:

Hi there, I was a tuba player, particularly playing in brass bands here in the UK. I retired from playing 30 years ago and became a guitarists. A few years ago I had my arm twisted by friends to play trombone in a big band and I'm loving it. It's been a steep learning curve especially getting to grips with the variety of clefs I have to read as I'm now playing in an orchestra too. Love the forum, loads of info and knowledgeable people.

Hey guys! I’m new to the forum too! I play regularly in a rock band and small jazz groups. I also repair instruments and started my own business, TromboneLAB, where I build carbon fiber trombone slides and offer custom modifications as well.
Happy to be here to share in this community!

Similar story- I played through middle school, high school and some college, then stopped for more than 25 years. When my kids were young I played recordings and told them stories about how much I enjoyed being in the school bands (with the intent of getting them interested).
Both kids later wound up being section leaders in a good program, and watching them play helped get me interested again (I also found that if I practiced in another room I would soon hear them both start practicing, so I didn't have to try to motivate them further, lol).
After they graduated, one of my former teachers invited me to join a community group that he plays in (along with quite a few local current and retired local band teachers, some of whom I remember from many years ago).
It's been fun, and sometimes frustrating- things that used to happen without thought.. don't anymore.. but I hope to improve on that.

Hello! I've been a reader of this forum for a year or so, and finally made an account so I can join in with conversations!
I live in the UK, but I spent four years studying in college in America, doing a liberal arts degree in Music and Computer Science, and doing as much music as I could! I'm how back home in England, and attempting to start a career as a professional trombonist/bass trombonist.
I currently play principal trombone in a big band on a King 2B, and principal trombone in a brass band on a Yamaha YSL-447G, and I'm having fun with being a trombonist for musicals too! Trombone is so much fun!

Hello! As a kid, I played the trombone until 10th grade, then did other things ... for 40 years! An overheard conversation at a holiday party led me to dust off my trombone and join a band a few weeks ago. Best thing I've done in a long time!
I've already learned a lot from forum posts here, so I'm making it official.

Hello all! I'm a returning player. I started as a music major in college, but wasn't a great performer. At the end of my second year, I BOMBED my jury piece (Blue Bells of Scotland) and was essentially shunned. I switched to Computer Information Systems and have been an IT proessional for many years (40). 4 years to retirement! I kept my High School horn, a King 3B with F attachment. Sold the other ones when I quit music school. I also have an antique Buescher Grand that I haven't opened in 40 years. I wonder what it smells like...? Anyway...I am baaaack and playing with a local community band. Finding other opportunities to do orchestra stuff.
Range, intonation, tone, air ... all difficult to get back!

Many of us have been there.
You were wise to keep your King 3B-F. It should serve you well.
Keep practicing & playing with others!

Hello all. I am new to the chat and want to keep up the tradition of new members introducing themselves. I am a music enthusiast playing trombone over 40 years from elementary school through undergrad and I currently play in a community concert band. I recently picked up the baritone horn, and after 5 days of hard work learning fingerings, performed in my first ever Tuba Christmas in NYC. I have an affinity with vintage instruments but my goto horn is a Bach Stradivarius 42B w/F-attachment circa 1970.

Hello everyone!
I’m also returning to the trombone after… wow, about 20 years. I spent two years as a trombone performance major at Northern Illinois University before switching majors, but I always promised myself I’d come back to it someday. It took a while—mainly because I’ve finally got my own place after years of apartment living with roommates!
Anyway, I’m really excited to be here and can’t wait to chat and learn from you all!

This is probably the most logical place to make a first post. Hello to all when I become visible.
I can play alright. I have put a lot of time, work and thought into being a good player. I just don't do that now. Now my activity on trombone is very casual/occasional, but my attitude and standards are still "professional".

Hello, long time lurker, now a member. Retired from my real-life job, I’m an amateur playing mostly bass trombone in a community band and a local big band in the Kansas City metro. I also occasionally play tenor trombone, euphonium and tuba.
A recent highlight was participating in the inaugural Kansas City Symphony ProAm event. Under the direction of the KC Symphony conductor, Matthias Pintscher, 78 amateur musicians (like me) and 20 KC Symphony musicians came together after only one sectional and two full orchestra rehearsals to present a wonderful concert of Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and John Williams to an amazing and appreciative audience of around 800 people.

Hi all, long time reader, now getting actively involved.
I'm based in Melbourne, Australia, and play in community ensembles. Predominately British Brass Bands, but also orchestras and concert bands. I've been playing for 20 years and keep music as a hobby outside of work. Prefer Yamaha horns, Denis Wick mouthpieces, and also play euphonium, baritone horn, tenor horn, and tuba.

I've been playing most of my life! Attended George Mason University for Music Ed.
I'm obsessed with swing era jazz! I own a rare collection of radio age recordings!
I play a Vega trombone and a Conn 4H from 1921!
I can lay a walking bass line on almost everything bass related!
Hoping to find more musician to chat with, and learn a thing or two!

Hi, I played in grades 6-10 and am now working up my embouchure to play again a couple of decades later. On a whim during the pandemic lockdown, I bought a plastic trombone and goofed off with it for a day or two. Now I’m on day 3 of playing it more seriously and have gotten through a few scales OK.
I picked up the ukulele a couple of years ago and started singing and/or playing at jams around town a few months ago with my husband who’s been playing guitar forever. Playing trombone would probably be a lot of fun especially at a funk jam, and I’d likely get more play time.
Happy for any advice on getting back into it and suggestions on finding a decent brass upgrade for a couple of hundred if possible. I played a Conn and then a Bach trigger when I was a kid, but they got sold/handed down when I quit band in the middle of high school.

Howdy all,
I originally started on Euphonium in 6th grade and played through senior of high school in the symphonic band. I saw how fun the jazz band was having and joined on trombone my junior year. Now 20 years later I'm in my community jazz band and in a local pep band. I just bought a Wessex superbone last week, so absorbing as much Ashley Alexander as I can!

Hi All, another newbie here. Played a reasonable amount back when I was at school - trombone was my first instrument. Carried on as a hobby through Uni, playing a bit with the Imperial College Symphony Orchestra and wind band. Pretty much stopped after I left uni, and then just after Covid decided to pick it up again - I had made a home working space and thought to myself “My old trombone would look cool in the corner and I could pick it up and blow every now and again”. A couple of weeks later, I was signed up for the local (Dorchester, UK) big band and wind band.
Having not played a lot of jazz when I was younger (it was mostly wind band, brass band and orchestra), it’s been really fun combining picking up the horn again with a new genre of learning. I think if I’d gone back to just playing things I did when I was younger there’d have been less appeal. Now I’m playing first trombone in 2 local community big bands as well as a “Symphonic concert band thing” so that’s good fun.
Currently playing on a Besson Sovereign straight small bore tenor (although oddly with an 8” bell) that I’ve had since I played as a youth. Waiting on my new toy - a Rath R1 in nickel silver to arrive in a few months time!
I’m keen to learn lots, but get easily overwhelmed and distracted by the amount there is out there! I also have a wife, kids and a full time non-music related job, so finding time is tough! I suppose I should stop trawling the forum and go do to some playing!

Hello, everyone! I am a Sophomore at Oral Roberts University majoring in Music Education, however, I would like to pursue a Master's in performance, and I am an aspiring orchestral trombonist! I play the Principal part in my section at ORU. I still have a ways to go to reach my goal, but I'm excited to be on a forum such as this to connect with many other trombonists! Also, I play a Courtois Mezzo 280, and I use a Doug Elliott mouthpiece.

I've posted elsewhere in the forum, but I'm an Oklahoma City amateur player (engineer by day). Played saxophone and some flute while back in school and decided to look at trombone and other brasses back in 2021. Now I have way too many instruments, and I like collecting unusual ones like my high and low Eb flugelhorns or my high F trumpet.
I mostly play trumpet and bass trombone lately. I've also lately been reading articles and books on acoustics.

Hi there,
You can call me Jeremy, and its been nice to read some of the recent discussions on the forum. I'm a music teacher and trombonist living in Madison, WI. I was on the old forum ages ago, or so it feels. I trained at Luther College(BA) and BGSU (MM). I guess I've done a bit of everything, but these days most of my gigging is in rock and funk groups, and whatever else I can balance between my teaching gig and family life. I continue to love practicing, studying brass history + pedagogy, and striving to make abstract musical ideas accessible for teenagers. I'm primarily a tenor player, but have been increasingly missing the bass trombone, and looking to pick it up again soon.

Thought I’d add a post here alongside submitting a response to something elsewhere that needs moderator approval as my first contribution…
I’m a keen amateur trombonist in the UK with a renewed mid-life enthusiasm for learning and improving whilst broadening my playing experience! I’m taking regular lessons again and playing in a mix of orchestral, wind band, big band, brass band, musical theatre and smaller group settings…on either tenor or bass trombone, as required.
I’ve been following the forum for a while before posting and have learned loads - thank you!
