Today I took possession of a King 2B SilverSonic.
The horn belonged to the late father of a high school friend. I’ve known my friend and her family for nearly 50 years.
According to the serial number, the horn was manufactured in 1952.
I don’t know anyone who loved to play as much as my friend’s father. Despite that, the horn is in beautiful condition. There is a bit of wear on the stockings and the gold wash in the bell is gone. Otherwise it is immaculate.
I’d played it a couple of times in the past and it was rather faded and dull. But my friend’s mother polished it up and it was sparkling when I got it home and opened the case.
An added touch: my friend included a note in which her father explained how he got started playing as a kid back on the prairies, played dances for $4 a night in a band with his brothers, and played in the army band. He got his dream horn-the 2B-in the mid-50s and played it for the next 60 years.
When he passed away a few years ago, before he was interred, his wife tucked his favourite mouthpiece in his pocket in case he needed it.
Quite an honour to be entrusted with this horn.

Great story!
Now show us some nice pictures! Part of the fun with a forum for instrument geeks, like this, is to see pictures of nice horns.
:amazed:

Hello. I'd be interested in purchasing your 2b King silver sonic. What's its condition? Price you have in mind? S&H to Florida? Thanks.

Please read the [entire] thread. I don't think Bach5G is interested in parting with his new treasured 2B!

Bach5G can't sell. You can't buy the (hi)story. It's his one and the one of his late friend.

In the shop having a bit of work done on the slide and a thorough pro clean. The slide has picked up a few knocks over the years. Pix when I get it back.

Looking forward to some trombone exposure!
...and also that the fix-up makes it a great horn!
