Is a Schilke 58 a good alternative to a Bach 1 1/4?

I’ve always thought a S58 = a B1 and 1/2 (and a 59 = a 1 1/4). But it appears I may be wrong.

General impressions of a 58?

well, your first impression was more correct.

IMO, there are better pieces out there than the original Bachs and Schilkes in those sizes.

Sorry I misread the comparison. A 1 and 1/4 size piece is larger than a Schilke 58.

The specs on the Schilke pieces say they are bigger, but I don't know how those correspond to real world use. Usually the S58 is compared to the B1 1/2, the S59 to the B1 1/4G, and the S60 to the B1G, even though the listed width for the measurements is significantly bigger on the Schilke. Like a Bach 1G is 28.00 mm, while the Schilke 60 is 29.03, which is quite a big difference.

For me S58 feel close to B 1,5 S59 close to B 1,25 and S60 close to B1G. I would like to see Doug Elliot comment on this? Mesuring vs feel?

I do not always trust published mouthpiece specs (which in any case don’t tell the whole story about a mouthpiece), so I’ve taken to doing my own basic measurements of Cup I.D. and Throat Diameter. This has verified that there’s often significant sample-to-sample variation. For what it’s worth, here are my measurements for a few bass trombone mouthpieces:

Model...........Cup I.D. (mm)........Throat (mm)

Bach 2G:.......~26.83 to 27.25........6.91 to 7.03

Bach 1½G:......27.00 to 27.25........7.00

Schilke 58:......27.20..................7.67

Schilke 59:......28.00..................7.67

Yamaha 58L:....26.90 to 27.20.......7.40

Yamaha 59L:...~27.50.................7.40

Wick 2AL:.......26.80.................7.42

Marcink 1½G:...27.30.................7.14

Shires 2MD:......27.25.................7.45

Courtois 1½G:...26.90.................7.04
