Background: Jr high tuba player wants to join worship band, leader agrees I can take him under my wings and he can play with us during practice to get him ready. He is playing in unfamiliar keys and struggling some, offered to bring my tuba to play along and help him. Results:

Some observations on brass instrument playing.

Old Conn 20J tuba gets heavy standing and playing.

After not playing the tuba for 2 years, it takes about half of first verse to get the notes you want to play.

Chord chart is not visible on music stand while standing and playing due to the recording bell.

“Fun” playing 4 complete songs plus some extra "let's do that verse again" on tuba during practice.

Having my tuba there seemed to help the rookie.

Not so fun playing upbeat first worship song on trumpet after all the tuba time.

Was planning on trombone for second song, but the way the song seemed to be flowing staying on the trumpet seemed to fit better. 2 songs on trumpet.

3rd song definite euph song, piece of cake getting all the notes I wanted to.

End of service song was first song over again, back to trumpet. Also kept it going as instrumental only during some final words. By last bridge chops are thinking maybe I should drop an octave.

Would I do it again...you bet!

Actually, I will be doing it again the next few weeks, but the tuba players will be sitting during practice!

I have a 20J. It's a real workout just to hold it.

Which makes what the Jacksonville State Marching 20Js do all the more awesome...

Anyone know a good chiropractor?

Totally agree, but let’s see them coming back and doing that when they’re 70 years old!

I have huge respect for those of you who play multiple instruments. It's all I can do to wrestle the stupid trombone.

20J out and a seat ready to go this morning, but student couldn’t make it. At least I had some fun playing the beast after practice!

My trombone feels like a feather after holding the tuba!
