For sale is a vintage 1950’s King 3B. The serial number (360XXX) places it probably in 1957 or 1958, during the era when 3Bs were still made by the H.N. White Company. It features the early, tall tuning slide (sometimes referred to as the “long loop” slide) that to my knowledge was offered only during those early years.

The horn is in excellent shape with normal cosmetic wear for a horn of its age -- no noticeable dents or other issues, and no visible wear on the slide stockings. The outer slide tubes were recently replaced with brand new ones, and the slide is in excellent adjustment -- smooth, fast and quiet.

The horn is responsive and powerful and fun to play. It has the classic tone of a true vintage 3B – warm at softer volumes, but with plenty of edge available with a little push. I’m parting with it because of a physical issue that necessitates using lighter horns.

It comes in a period-appropriate, burgundy faux-alligator King coffin case that is in good shape for its age but has some wear that you can see in the pictures. The latches work, but the left-hand latch no longer springs open. It’s totally usable, however, and does not have any odor issues.
