Hello all,
I'm looking to participate in a concerto competition. Tried out with the Grondahl last year and did not win it. Aside from the Grondahl, what are some of the best trombone concertos to perform in a competition? Disregarding any technical limitations, looking for personal opinions. Thanks.

The Rota or Tomasi.
But what age group are you talking? Concerto comp for a youth orchestra, or for the big league?

The David is a very typical choice. Maybe too typical… but if you’re thinking of an orchestral career at some point you’ll have to know it.

Find one you really love that makes you excited to practice and perform. It's an uphill battle to win solo competitions on trombone, so you might as well play your dream piece, assuming it has a playable reduction (looking at you, Rouse Concerto!)

Last time I saw the Rouse they said the orch used midi to learn to piece quickly. I think the tech sorta existed even in 1993 or whenever it came out

How strict are the rules about being a concerto? (Yes, I know, you said it‘s concerto competition…)
If there‘s any flexibility, the trombone solo piece I’ve enjoy the most listening to live is Casterede‘s Sonatine.
If it has to be a Concerto, how about the L.Mozart?

David or Jacob.
