Can anyone recommend good safe tools to take apart a Hagmann? I have shaky hands from years of coffee and caffeine and I'm looking for something safe so I don't damage the finish.

I don’t know the size of hex key you need off the top of my head—but you basically just need that and a small screwdriver. Here is the official guidance for maintaining the Hagmann valve:

http://www.trombone.ch/EN/maintenance.html

Note that you will not have to whack it with anything to disassemble the valve as you do on a standard rotor. Once you pull off the valve cap (it’s a press-fit; it does not screw on/off) and detach the disc labeled “B” in the first photo from the spindle, the valve core will just slide out.

You need a 2mm hex key/Allen wrench. Make sure you use a metric, 2mm hex key and not an imperial 5/64 one, otherwise you might damage the screwheads. As far as I recall that's all you need but depending on the linkage you might need a screwdriver for that (mine had dual socket screws that took either the hex key or a flathead screwdriver).

A 2mm hex key and a Torx T10 screwdriver for servicing Hagmann valves. The bumpers are 5mm nitrile.

and it's worth getting a proper Allen key. I tried to use my mini-screwdriver set and, even with the right head, couldn't quite get the right angle for traction.

I love the Hagmann valves and think they are a great acoustical option that works wonderfully for many players.

In my opinion, the biggest weakness of the Hagmann valve is the volatility of the spindle when the valve is pulled apart. I have never dropped a Hagmann valve core, but people have brought their horns to me after they have dropped their valve cores. It takes some patience to get that spindle back to being true and it must be straight and try to work properly. So, Hagmann valve owners……be careful out there!
