Hello

Does anybody know which horns H.C. Smith played?

Which one did he play on his recording?

In any picture I’ve ever seen of him with a trombone, he had an 88H. Don’t know the mouthpiece.

I believe that he played an 88H with a Bach 6.5AL.

Dillon Music currently has four of his instruments for sale; all Conns from 1950/60, 2x8H, 88H and a 35H alto.

That's right - I remember seeing those on the Dillon site. One of the 8H's is a rare (for that period) yellow brass horn as I remember. I can't justify buying any more horns without moving some out of here first, but I would love to make a trip to Dillons to try those! He was a beautiful player! I bet they are great instruments!

Several of those have already left the building. I believe only the 35H is actually still there.

I've seen pictures of him with what looks like the common Conn Remington on a 88H. Don't know if that's what he played on most of the time. I knew someone who studied with him, and I remember this player said that Smith was adamant that some kind of chap stick be used while playing as it promoted lip necessary lip motion .This was many years ago, so take that with a grain of salt.
