Watching the Rivian R3 reveal event, CEO RJ Scaringe pointed out that you can "carry a trombone" in the trunk. I feel so seen. Def marketing to me directly!

He's talking about carrying things so large they stick out the back window. I'm not sure that's how I want to haul my trombone!

Not really interested in a Rivian, but it appears that the compact R3 is much smaller than the new Rivian R2, which itself is apparently fairly compact (perhaps the size of a Subaru Forester or Toyota RAV 4?). A trombone (or two) will fit in either of those, but only sideways, in the behind-the-seats storage area. In my Subaru Outback my trombones fit the storage area longitudinally, so I can easily fit three of them (or lots of accessories). In the proposed Rivian R3, it might be a tough squeeze to stuff in even a single trombone. :idk:

Precisely why my wife and I always check to see if the trunk is big enough for our normal loadout before seriously considering a new car.

I saw this one on the Rivian website:

Somehow this doesn't look like the way I want to stow / transport my gear.
Is this a serious part of Rivian's promotional campaign?

Yup.
It's about 2/3 of way down on this page:

Search for this string:
the video will be right below it.
On the plus side, the sousy bell does keep the hatch from being closed on the other instruments.

With R3, its hatch-style design maximizes space while keeping a sporty, athletic silhouette

Well, they are decidedly not European designs…. They seem to be focused on appearing 1) American, 2) electric, 3) NOT Tesla.
From the R1 T&S and the few R2 models running around, they aren’t too bad on the roads here, they all have the nice trick of looking larger than they are.
Also interesting, check out their sound design:

That car looks like a hot lava dook <EMOJI seq="1f4a9" tseq="1f4a9">💩</EMOJI>
Forget trombones, the promotion should just be Harry Caray (played by Will Ferrell) going "Hey kids, do you wanna feel like a square?"

A good percentage of the Amazon vans that I see around my neighborhood are made by Rivian. I'm not a big fan of the styling of either the Rivian vans or the passenger vehicles. But at least the vans can haul a large number of trombones.

I like how they look. Way better than all the whatever-shaped crossovers out there.

I was thinking that it reminded me of some of the stuff American Motors Corporation turned out back in the day. Apparently I'm not the only one:
<LINK_TEXT text="https://www.thedrive.com/news/rivian-r3 ... ce-version">https://www.thedrive.com/news/rivian-r3-is-a-cyberpunk-amc-gremlin-with-a-jacked-up-r3x-performance-version</LINK_TEXT>
The author calls it a cyberpunk Gremlin, but I'm thinking it looks more like a bulked-up Eagle wagon with a few inches chopped of its nose and tail (of course, all of those AMC designs - Hornet, Gremlin, Spirit, and Eagle - were variations on the same theme).

Ooh! Bad memories. I carpooled with a co-worker for a while when he had an AMC Gremlin.
Let's just say, the other two of us were glad when he replaced that car!

At least getting in and out of the back seat was easier in a Gremlin than in a Pinto or a Vega - and Gremlins neither tended to catch fire like Pintos nor burn oil and prematurely rust like Vegas. None of the American-made small cars of that era were winners.
