I'm looking for some new listening material and I've got some iTunes credit burning a hole in my pocket. Tell me what I should buy.

Thanks,

Paul

Genre? I'm listening to Aubrey Logan of late. Great bone and vocals.

From some recent stuff I've put in my Spotify playlist...

Kamasi Washington, "Heaven and Earth" and/or "The Epic" (trombonist Chris Porter gets lots of solo time, but Kamasi is awesome)

Nate Smith, "Kinfolk"

Alan Holdsworth, "The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever" (12 disks worth of music!)

Simon Phillips, "Protocol 4"

Michael Manring, "Soliloquy"

Adam Nitti, "Not of This World"

You can check these things out on Youtube or Spotify first.

You can also go check out Grammy nominees for this year in whatever categories you're interested in and check out those recordings. You can do this going back as many years as the Grammies keep online records for.

The best album I've purchased in the last couple of years is the last Kepler Quartet recording of the Ben Johnston string quartets - nos. 6, 7, and 8. If the universe were fair, their recording of No. 7 in particular should have won a Grammy for best classical performance and also probably for music production, but alas, this stuff is too unknown for that kind of recognition.

Still, for those who are familiar with Johnston's music, it's considered some of the finest string quartet writing of the 20th century, right along with the famous Shostakovich/Bartok/etc. Johnston may even contest that this is purely 20th century, too: he has said in an interview that he doesn't really consider a piece finished until it gets a proper premiere, which these three only got in 2016 via this recording. There was a valiant string quartet that recorded No. 6 in the 1980s, but they didn't have the harmonic vocabulary to really do it properly.

I've enjoyed listening to Craig Morris (trumpet) album that was released recently receiving a Grammy nomination. Really lyrical and musical playing fwiw.
