Outer slide stand?

I'm thinking of improving my general trombone care and I'm wondering. I have a small "forest" of trombones on trombone stands in my practice area, and one problem with that setup is the slides. If there is moisture in the horn after I'm done playing and cleaning it, it will inevitably stay in the slide and settle into the crook. A way around that is to take the outer slides off and store them upside-down so they are guaranteed to drain. Has anyone ever seen something like a trombone outer slide stand, where I would hang these outer slides off of it by the crook, upside-down?

I have occasionally hung the outer slide on the inner slide's crossbrace. Requires carefully threading the outer brace between the inner tubes... :shock:

I've also used a doorknob! But only when living alone.

A wall-mounted hook would probably work well. Maybe one of these?

There are various kinds of things you can clamp to a stand tube (or elsewhere, or others you can put on a wall). I use one of these to hold my outer slide if I want to take it off for some reason (like cleaning).

I do this for extra slides. Two command hooks. These have been hanging for about 10 years. You can put them either way - up if you're worried about the inner falling out or down if you're worried about condensation accumulating.

If I’m too busy or too lazy to run a Yamaha drop-rag through the slide, I’ll take it apart, hang the inner slide on one half of my music stand, and the outer slide upside down on the other half. I aim them so they drop into my ceramic-coated iron spittoon:

Hey Andrew

My trombones on the stand.

There are 2 - 2 x 6's with angle tops on the right front corner.

Real easy to hang any part of several slides on each.

Together. apart. right side up or down.

3 or 4 pieces fit gently on each board.

Also easy to hang the outer slide while lubing the inners.

Each trombone has a wood dowel stuck in a 2x6 on the floor then a toilet plunger with a hole in it slide down to the needed spot and a rubber chair or crutch tip on the top. A rag for condensation and each horn has a happy place.

Not to be a scold but saliva is the #1 cause of pink rot if not mistaken. I hang all my outer slides upside down after practicing. A great way to keep a horn playable for 100 years! Crook replacement is not cheap.

I've had 100 ish slides come through my hands in the last few years. Not one had actual red rot. I think it's a vastly overstated problem (unless you have that particular body chemistry).

I disagree Aiden. Of the last 30 or so trombones that came through my shop, at least 7 or 8 of them had red rot. These were pro-grade horns…….Bach, Conn, Edwards, etc….and none of them were made any earlier than 1990. It is a problem, but most people who own horns with red rot do not know that their instrument(s) have it.

I don't think I've seen red rot on any of my (numerous, but far fewer than 100) slides. Since I've received them (mostly acquired used; only 2 were purchased new many decades ago), I clean and dry my slides, inside and out, and store them "dead dry."

Another consequence of this setup besides looking at the crook: the other half of the slide now also is more free to breathe when I'm not using it. Typically, when I'm not practicing I will just put the trombone on a trombone stand and the outer slide on that wall. That way, everything is draining and breathing.

Will it actually have much of an effect on maintenance? I don't really know.

I'd be interested to know how, in general, people determine that a "red spot" is red rot ("dezincified" brass) rather than cuprous oxide (red/brown patina on the surface of the brass). I'm also inclined to think that if the "red spot" is on the inside of a slide it's simply more likely to be red rot than oxide?

The tell for Red Rot is that it works from the inside of the tube out. If you polish the spot and it goes away, it wasn't Red Rot. If it stays or gets worse as you polish it, it is Red Rot.

I've seen a lot of slides with speckles in the finish identified as Red Rot, but they can't be. Most common area of the slide to show Red Rot is near the water key (spit valve).

So presumably, if you 'scope the tube and see it on the inside, then it's (almost certainly?) red rot? Or more certainly, if you see a spot on the outside of the tube, 'scope it and see a spot at the same position on the inside.

I wish I had a space where something like that would be possible, but leading a trombone on a stand with the inner slide exposed and the outer slide hanging upside down elsewhere makes me pretty nervous.

I have now been considering getting the Yamaha swab, though I don't know if it would be more effective than the brass saver brushes. How good are they at getting all the moisture out in a single pass?

Sounds like it. Here in the "heavy" air of the Northeast it's a problem. Probably true for the muggy South, and in perpetually damp northern Europe too. Airing your slides is free and avoids the heartache of those little reddish dots.

At my last house, when my water heater died I moved it to another room in the basement and was able to refinish the closet it was in as a trombone closet. I lined the walls with pegboard and used pegboard hooks, setup slightly differently than how Dillon Music handles them, but with the same basic idea. I had two configurations for slides: one for narrow slides and one for wider slides. Each outer slide would hang by the crook on two of these hooks, and the inner slide likewise would then hang by the crossbrace on two hooks. I had one of those garage carpets lined with rubber under it and the neoprene "brass condensation collector" pads ontop, so when condensation would leak out, it wouldn't make a mess.

I really liked the setup. I'm going to be doing something similar in my new music room. I'm thinking I'll probably hang the pegboard on a wire shelf that I have. I'm hoping to get that finished sometime this month... will post pictures.
