Hey all,
So I've gotten a few messages about the above two questions. For this weekend in particular, we wanted to make it easy to register so we relaxed the requirements for registration. As a consequence, that makes it easier for bots to register too. I've banned a number of them so far, as have a few other moderators but what keeps that from becoming evident is we have a two post minimum before your activity becomes public. I'm actually surprised at how well that has worked...
So in light of that, if you wish to participate without needing to make two more substantive posts, go ahead and reply to this message twice. Just make it substantive / specific enough that a bot wouldn't write it. That shouldn't be too hard as most of what the bots have written is something to the effect of:
(They weren't advertising for my site though ;) )

To add to Matt's explanation, posts not in English will probably be rejected. I've rejected posts in Cyrillic going back 2 years. If your native language is not English take advantage of a translator program. We'll try as hard as possible to figure out what you mean.

It's actually interesting, the few that I've banned have apparently not even been particularly well formed Russian. The grammar was apparently similar to:
Source: My wife is a native Russian speaker. It's almost like someone ran it through Google Translator to get it into Russian. :?:

And I gotta say... some of the things I'll miss most about TTF are the emojis.
I can't tell you how many times I've started replying to an email, and got mad at GMail that I can't find the shrug or eyeroll emojis. "Pedantic lecturing" and "embarrassedly shuffling my feet" emojis were close seconds.
I'm happy to see TC features an eyeroll, at least.

....and this is my second post. Repair tech here. :-)
I got to look at a "Yamaha" flute a few days ago. Well, the sticker on the flute said "Yamaha," but the it looked and felt like a Prelude. The woman paid $200 for it new and thought she got a great deal. Still better than paying more for something of the same quality, I suppose. It was interesting to see such a brazen ripoff. And trombone-related: Parker/Houser's 4G N rims fit DE's XT cups very well in most cases. The DE rims do not, however, fit the Parker/Houser cups.

Anyway, now this is my second post.
The reason why I'm here is that I've played bass trombone for years, and I've never really been a tenor player. I was asked to play the trombone book in a quintet about a year ago, and for the last six months borrowed a great Bach 42G from a friend. He needed it back, so now I'm in search of something along those lines.
Cheers!
Jack

Don Knaub used to play the trombone book in the Ithaca Brass Quintet on a single trigger bass.

you guys are a good lot, thanks for letting a complete newbie parent join in the conversation! I love learning from experienced people in all fields! thanks to all the mods for creating and managing this forum!
p.s. it seems that PMs are not functioning as expected for me, perhaps because of "new member" status? I can't seem to verify that they have sent. Some replies also just sit in the "Outbox" with no way to send.

We love newbie parents. Ask as many questions as you can. We're only here to help. Rather you buy something sensible than waste money on something you won't even be able to pass on if the kid decides he wants something else.
Btw, you didn't need to put two posts here. The two posts you put in the thread asking for help counted. You were able to send and receive messages as soon as the second one was approved by one of us Mods.

I have a math degree which says that would be four total, but I've only made three. Does anybody remember Mr. Kimball from Green Acres? Let's see a bot come up with that kind of logic!

My first post on trombonechat. I was very active on the TTF until around 2008, when gave up my job as a moderator over there. I didn't get back onto TTF much after that time. I am very glad to see that TromboneChat is a trombone forum and doesn't have the Chit-Chat area, like TTF. I could never understand the worth of that part of the TTF and added nothing to "the trombone," in my opinion.
Thanks for not carrying over that "playground" and keeping this a more trombone-centered forum, I have been lurking around a few times, especially in the classified section. I am getting ready to downsize this summer and will probably list some of my extra mouthpieces and a couple trombones which I no longer use. Good to see some familiar names over here!
Thanks for your efforts to keep a good trombone forum on the Internet!

Hey I'm hoping this will be my first successful post. Great site for finding answers to burning questions as to why I can't seem to get any better even though I practice all the time!

Under your name (top right) you will find a down arrow which opens a menu. The first option is "User Control Panel". Your profile settings can be changed from within it.

Okay, here's a first reply to establish I'm not a "bot." I'm a native Floridian who, because of some streak of insanity in my genetic heritage, has wound up in Iowa for 30+ years. I am not a fan of snow and ice. I gag at the taste of onions. I am struck by wonder and awe when I consider that, by standards of what I perceive to be an infinite "universe," I am a subatomic particle living on a speck of dust called Earth. All of which sounds human to me, although I cannot prove to myself with absolute certainty I am not kin to Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

And here's a second message to prove I'm some creation of perniciously artificial intelligence. I'm a husband, a dad, and a granddad. I write poetry in which rhyme pertains (I hope) to meaning, not usually to words. I'm a spiritual secularist in recovery from 41 years of Presbyterian ministry. In addition to trombone, I pretend to play the guitar and have been something of a folksinger/song-writer since the mid 1960s.
Hey all,
So I've gotten a few messages about the above two questions.
<QUOTE>Я обнаружил, что это действительно крутой угол Интернета, и вы должны присоединиться ко мне ниже по следующей ссылке, с которой я определенно не связан: www.mattkingsbury.com
(They weren't advertising for my site though ;) )

I enjoyed the post about Symphonys using/requiring same brand trombones.

Non-bot post #2: My first horn was a king 606 that I played until 8th grade, with a few fill in appearances until a couple of years into college when it became my marching/pep band horn. After college I used it some for community jazz band. My 2nd horn was a conn 88h in silver plate. It was my primary horn from 8th grade through college and for community concert band and church. I’m college I spent a semester playing a school owned holton tr181 bass trombone in jazz band. After college my mom found another king 606 at a thrift store that was in better shape than my beginner horn, so I used it for jazz. Having been bitten by the jazz bug, I found a used curved brace tempo for jazz, and have also used it with the 88h for church. My newest acquisition, after being lost by FedEx for a month, is a 1932 conn 44h vocabell that I hope will work well for the jazz/jazz combo stuff I am playing in now. COVID probably killed the community concert band and the community jazz band has been operating as a combo and only getting together if there is a gig scheduled.

Non-bot post #1.....Saw this forum and figured I would love to take part. I have been playing on and off since JHS band (mostly off). I have always returned to the scene of the crime and just cant shake the bug of a lifelong attempt to get better. I was fortunate enough to take private lessons as a adult from the late Jack Carmen who taught at Five Towns College and was in the trombone section of the Buddy Rich Big Band during its hey dey. He was very patient with me and I cherish all the hand written work I have from him, He was a great guy. I am approaching retirement age and want to devote time in my efforts to make a Community band section. I'll post my horns in my second post.

Non-bot post #2...My stable is a modest one with one sweet one that I acquired many moons ago.....My small bore student is a Eastman ETB-310, nothing special a .500 bore student horn. it is a decent student horn with nickel silver outers and has decent slide action for a student. I also have a Blessing B7 .525 straight tenor, just to have a step up.I bought it used and it was a good deal so i grabbed it. I also have a Blessing B88 Bb/F .547 bore. Its a good horn to practice with and introduce the F attachment use. I also in my travels fell into a Reynolds Contempora Philharmonic model 72. Its a .564 single rotor bass made in 1959 ( I believe). its kind of like a classic car under the cover in your garage to me. Its in great shape and a attestment to the craftsmanship of days gone by, as it can be cased for years and the slide is like glass. I really don't play that one but its funny I wouldn't be happy without it. I bet you understand what I mean. That's my story and my second required post. Thanks for having me.

Post #1: Greetings all! I am a Houston-based, strictly amateur-hour, bass trombone player. I stumbled across this site and was super impressed with the information and opinions shared here. I took a 20-something year hiatus from the horn, but have been playing as much as possible over the last 7 years, as I decided it would be a good retirement activity!

Post #2: I have a few different horns in the collection. The one I play most is an Edwards B454-V bass trombone. I've also got a King 3B, a Bach 42B with 2 bells(!), and a King 2B that my daughter insists is really her horn.
I look forward to learning more from this site. Thank you!

Ha I love this thread. Post #1
I started on French horn and switched to tuba in high school. Played through college and.doubled on trombone for jazz band. Haven't really played anything brass regularly for 40 years. Though I regularly play at the piano. Picked up an old King 606 my son had lying around. Been practicing for about a month on etudes. Found this forum. Looking forward to all the advice.

This is my second reply to this post needing approval by a moderator in order to be able to post things to Trombone.chat. I own and play a nice late 1940's Olds Super and a white plastic P-Bone. They both sound good though the Olds has a definitely smoother timbre reflecting its quality etc.

You must make three, substantial posts, each of which must be approved by a moderator before your posts begin appearing to you and others. In other words, they won't show up, even to you! Our moderators are usually pretty active, so a few hours. These are meant to prevent users who have no intention of participating in the forum, but merely to scam or spam. Your posts must be "substantial"; not merely throwaway lines. We don't have a hard-and-fast rule for this. But make your posts be at least a few sentences that are on topic. Do not make your first posts in the "tangent" section unless it is an extremely, materially useful comment. This thread will no longer serve as a means sufficient to approve your registration.
