I have been making my rounds on the tuba/euph forums, as well as Reddit, on my quest to find a rather specific example of a tuba mouthpiece. I thought I'd ask for help here was well.
I recently acquired my first tuba to get my doubling game together for some pit orchestra and big band jobs I have coming up. It’s a Mahillon 390 (4v 3/4 BBb .625 bore). I’ve been trying out a handful of different mouthpieces and the one that really clicks with both me and the horn is a Yamaha 65. The one I have in the old blank style (pictured below - left) is kind of chewed up, so I bought a new one (right). Turns out the new style is just over a whole ounce lighter than the old style. I greatly prefer how the older/heavier version both plays and sounds in every way, and it’s not even close.
So, I am trying to track down an example of the 65 in the old style blank in better condition than the one I have. I haven’t had much luck so far…I think that could be because these are towards the small end of the size spectrum of tuba mouthpieces. That likely means they were generally in the hands of younger students so if they even survived at all, they're trashed worse than mine is.
My tiny-bore BBb really seems to like this mouthpiece, and so does my face.
So - if anyone happens to have one of these, knows someone who does, finds one collecting dust in a back room of a music store or school where you teach, I'd sure appreciate the chance to purchase it.
Thanks!
