Cool Custom Yamaha- based on a student model! YSL-852

Just picked this up from eBay, another one of the top-end Japanese only market horns from the '80s.
If you look closely, you can see all the giveaways- trapezoidal ferrules, real nickel oversleeves on the slide, trim rings on all tuning slide tubes, the works.
And yet the basis is the (admittedly excellent) 352 student model .500/8" trombone.
Valve section measures at .5285, just a titch under the 3B/F .530 rotor and tubing. The valve of course is very well made- notice the half-mechanical/half-string linkage.
Despite the looks, it's actually in quite good shape- no stocking wear or big dings. Color me surprised. I'll be removing the lacquer and polishing it up, I think!
I haven't had a chance to really use it yet- I'll give it a shot at work and see how it stacks up to my 3B/F. I've had a friend play it already and he liked it quite a lot! First impressions for me is that it blows quite well, with a better valve register than my 3B/F, but more zing all around.

Thanks Aidan. I see them (the trapezoidal ferrules) now. Japanese models only?

Yes, as far as I know these are only on the Custom horns (and some other top-end stuff from the same time period- my friend has Schilke trombone #2, which was made largely with Yamaha parts, with the same ferrules)

It would be neat to document or video the process of cleaning this one up. I know I'd learn a thing or two for sure.

Super cool horn! Thinking of getting a valve on my 891ZD. If it doesn’t click for you I’d be very interested!

I'll do what I can... when I'm out there in the sun spraying oven cleaner I'm not usually very inclined to take videos or photos haha! But it would be a good idea, you're right.

JDM Yamahas have always been interesting. It is quite disappointing that their tenor offers in international market are just a bunch of large bore trying to be Bach-like, and a few jazz horns.
