Hi everyone,

I am in the market for a new cup mute for my Bach 42. I will be using it for Wind Ensemble and Orchestra.

Just wondering what you are using and would recommend.

I like my Denis Wick. I liked the older style better, though.

Note that there are two JoRals. One is supposedly for small bore and the other one is for large bore. I have yet to find a trombone that fits the small bore version. Even among true small bore trombones.

I like the Denis Wick. But only because it comes apart for travel.

I recently went through this search for bass, and the Wick was what I chose. Wallace ialso sounds good, but its really heavy and not easy to get in the US. I've had a Wick for tenor for almost 40 years. I've recorked it, but its still a great mute.

I prefer the Ullven triple straight plate mute. It has the best cup sound! Bonus that it also acts as a quiet straight mute (sans cup) and adjustable loud straight mute (with the cup reversed).

I have one. It fits the Bach 39 alto bell and it works pretty well in most flugelhorns. (It doesn't work in the large-bell Benge flugel or in a Yamaha alto.) If you build up the corks a lot (as in, double their original thickness) it can work as a tight cup in a King 3B or Bach 36/42, but the intonation is really weird.

My go-to tenor cup is the Denis Wick. The only knock I have on it is that it doesn't blend too well with the ubiquitous red and white fiber cup. (The same is true of the Jo-Rals.) But Wicks and Jo-Ral cups work together fine.

Avoid the Tom Crown cup mute. It doesn't blend with any other cup mute on the planet (and doesn't really sound like a cup to my ears, anyway). The Trum-Cor adjustable cup sounds great but is much too flimsy to transport to gigs. I guess it's okay if you always play in the same hall and have an instrument locker/storage.

If I were buying a new tenor cup, I'd look carefully at the Morningstar CF cup.

I've been impressed with the Morningstar cup mute for bass. I have one on order for tenor. The Morningstar straight mutes are also great (the handle design is neat).

My Jo-Ral bass trombone mute seems to fit my LT42G and LT42AG just fine. My Beversdorf straight mute is a bass mute and that is what I use for large bore tenor. I have to hold the Jo-Ral in the bell for the Duo-Gravis bass trombone.

I definitely second muschem and Dennis’s recommendation on the Morningstar mutes - I’ve also had some success on both tenor and bass with joral stuff as well, you just have to have corks that are suited for your instrument (S-mute sells an adjustable cork set that is very useful for this)
