That’s a beautiful looking bell! You’ll have to give us an update on how it plays for you!

Hi there, I have a similar bass bone and am in need of some advice. The original lead pipe has been removed and I’m looking at how to find something compatible I can install. I know that these bones have larger bores and could use any information.
Many thanks,
Jared

Some of the shops (Horn Guys and Dillons) should have some compatible parts, some of the better techs (Eric Edwards, Eric Swanson, John Sandhagen, Paul Abel) might have either original parts or something that would work. I’m personally a big fan of the Brad Close / Brassark leadpipes, if they don’t have exactly what would fit as a standard part they are able to modify their designs to order.
P.S. Brad is a great tech, as well.
P.S.S. My recommendations aren’t the only good sources around, only the one’s I’m personally familiar with here in the states.
Many thanks,

Unless it's crazy small, you can always use a 547 pipe. You'll have to have the end flared a little but the reality is that .013" is actually quite a small distance. Alternatively, you can get a 562 pipe and have it buffed down as well but in my experience the former is easier.

Hi Matt
Are you saying the Contempora has a smaller bore than 562?

Oops, I misread it; but the point is still basically valid. We have standard sizes of leadpipes that are relatively easily acquired (484/485, 500, 508, 525, 547, 562, even 578) so anything that falls in between those gaps is never that far off from a standard, stock option - it's just a matter of taking a little off or flaring out a little. You can't do that infinitely obviously but these sizes are easily enough acquired that it isn't a huge deal.

I had a 1967 Reynolds Contempora " Stereophonic" Double valve Bass @ .565 bore. I had no issues using my SHires , EDwards and Minick O Leadpipes on it. AS someone else stated you can have the pipe flared slightly .AS I use and remove my leadpipes the part that goes into the Handslide will get compressed and become loose. I take my Bass Mouthpiece and insert it into that end and give it a couple of twists while exerting a small bit of pressure to expand it back to a more snug fit. . Also some Tuning slide grease helps fill the gaps. Larry Minick used to put a piece of Masking Tape on his 547 pipes below the Stop ring for a Snug Fit. FWIW
