It was great to see DJ again for the first time since the Pandemic. He's been creating beautiful paintings during his convalescence, including the huge 36" x 48" landscape pictured below.

Almost all of the top tier horns were sold to offset medical bills and home care, but if anyone has time to make a pilgrimage to the crumbling Art House of Horns across the alley from DJ's place on Chester Hill, there are numerous 2B and 3B bell sections in the back room, various Olds pro horns, some Elkhart 6H's and 8H's, New York Bach Mercedes and Mercurys, various other quirky old vintage horns, and many dozens of classic vintage cases looking for mates (some are pictured below). Just give DJ a few day's notice so one of his caretakers can be available to unlock and take you on a tour. It's a bit treacherous in there, so take your time and be careful making your way around.

If you're active on Facebook, that's the best way to reach him:

https://www.facebook.com/donald.j.kennedy2/

It's truly amazing that DJ has beaten Stage 4 prostate cancer and is walking around the house again with a cane after suffering a fractured pelvis. I hope this generous outpouring of support here on the Chat will encourage him to keep working toward a full recovery.

Tomorrow is DJ's 76th birthday, so I'd like to wish a very Happy Birthday to my longtime friend and mentor in the vintage trombone business!

No decoder ring. DJ is a frustrated poet and lots of his posts are rather obtuse. But he had (maybe still has) a great collection of trombones; many of which are for sale.

Having just visited DJ, l think I can help here...

"brain/Fog egg bog/Yule log": Holiday state-of-mind stream of conciousness rhyming.

"Drama cats": lots of drama with his caretakers; there are probably a couple of his favorite cats in the room at the time of writing, so it's a double entendre, also referring to his caretakers as "cats".

"Mary Anne Watrous/Carolyn Johnson/Fedchohon" (Fedchok): people from the trombone world with whom he has recently communicated. DJ and Watrous were good friends, and Bill's widow still calls occasionally.

"BROOKLYN BAGLES TOO": Irvin Karan recently sent him some bagels (I hear they weren't moldy this time).

"BENN HANSON DAVE(V)ASHLEY": more friends from the trombone world with whom he has recently communicated, probably birthday well-wishers.

Hope this helps.

Erik, he sends stuff worldwide (or at least used to). If you send him a "want list" he will probably reply.

He also services fountain pens if you are interested in those.

FWIW DJ is no longer in the pen business.

To do any meaningful trombone business, you will need to make a trip to Chester, IL and do business in person.

DJ hasn't been inside the Art House of Trombones in 3+ years, and isn't physically capable of going there now. There are steps to climb, and it's treacherously cluttered inside. He has a caretaker who can let you in and accompany you on a tour, where you can look at and select from what remains of a once great collection.

And FWIW, pretty much all the real gems are long gone. You won't find any NY/MV Bach Strads, Schmelzers, Williams, etc.

But there are numerous 2B and 3B bells, small bore Olds, Reynolds, Bach Corp 42B bells, some 6H's and 8H's etc.

On separate visits, Mike Corrigan and I dug out some of the more desirable horns and took them over to DJ's house, so DJ has easy access the following list of horns (in cases) that are for sale and would be easy to access and ship:

2B Silversonic '50's in original silver gator coffin case

Very early friction fit 2B Silvertone in original case

8H '50's with bow guard and half moon engraving

78H '50's with half moon engraving

Bach 12 '80's

Bach 16M '90's

Bach 36 '80's (I believe this was one of Clark Gayton's horns)

Bach 42 '80's bell with 36 Corp. slide

Selmer K-Mod in original case

Glad to hear from you, DJ - was just wondering how you were doing! I've still got a 607F I bought from you a while back: modded by Osmun to be a 607F/Gb/G depending on how you arrange the tuning slides.

All the best: your individual spirit has been missed!

This made my day. <EMOJI seq="2764" tseq="2764">❤️</EMOJI>

I had the pleasure of chatting on the phone with DJ about 6 months ago.

We talked quirky horns, artwork, and I literally sat back and took notes as he talked history- such a creative and inspiring human. Somebody else put it well earlier in this thread- he's our link to the past.

Also lots of conversations through Facebook messenger. His writing style is Monk meets Andy Kaufman.
