Hi, I'm Dana, and I'm a tromboneholic. ("Hi, Dana!") It has been three weeks since my last ballad. Now I'm looking for another one. Specifically, I'm on the hunt for an old-fashioned, beautiful, soaring, romantic ballad to record that hasn't already been recorded by Dick Nash, Urbie Green, or Bill Watrous, but is in that vein.
Whatcha got for me?

Harrison, I’m impressed that you found and suggested this wonderful Swedish folk melody by Evert Taube. I does, indeed, work great on trombone and I try to perform it as often as I can, but not in a jazz version.
I would love to hear a jazz arrangement, Dana. I will PM a lead sheet to you shortly in case you would like to give it a shot.

Good choice! :good: I play this song once every day since it's one of the songs I play in my warmup. I would love to hear you play that..... or I would love anything you play acctually.

How about "Purple Shades" Written by Phil S. Dooley, Lew Douglas and Frank Lavere ? I put it right up there with Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" ! Joni James sang it a lot back in the early 50's. :good:

There are a bunch of tunes in the "Great American Songbook" taken from ballads in Broadway shows that were sped up in their "typical" jazz interpretation. It would be nice to see more jazz ballad interpretations of these.

Two of my own favorite ballads to play are Portrait of Jenny and You’re My Everything. I just played Portrait of Jenny with some friends the other night and it is really pretty and fun to play; the guys said it reminded them of Misty…

I have heard Nils Landgren singing and playing a beautiful rendition of that song.
Some of my personal (very sentinemtal) favorites:
In the wee small hours of the morning
Here's that rainy day
Misty
Nancy
Always on my mind
You could also look into some opera repertoire. especially the Italian (Verdi/Puccini...) operas have very very beautiful songs...

Since the forum software doesn't have a "like" function, I just want to say that I'm reading all of these and making a list of the ones I want to see if I can make them what I'm looking for. Great stuff! Thank you all for the great songs so far!

Is also a great tune for trombone. I wrote a quartet arrangement for students and you can make great music even with very limited players. With your abilities you could do it more in the upper register like the king singers did here.
